Hamas Reiterates: We Will Never Recognize Israel

Hamas will never recognize Israel and will not accept the conditions laid out by the Middle East peacemaking Quartet, according to the Islamist movement's deputy leader.

Speaking late on Saturday, Mussa Abu Marzuq said Hamas, which recently signed a reconciliation deal with the Western-backed Palestinian leadership in Judea and Samaria, would never agree to recognize Israel.

"We will not recognize the Zionist entity," he said at a press conference in Gaza City.

A senior member of the Hamas political bureau said on Saturday that his movement is likely to take part in the proposed Palestinian presidential election. Speaking to journalists in Gaza, Mousa Abu Marzouk said that the decision was taken to take part in all elections in Palestine, including parliamentarian, municipal and syndication polls. Asked about the presidential elections, he said that the decision has not been taken yet. "Probably," he admitted.

Parties and civil society organisations decry marginalisation of women in country’s transition

Four political parties and seven civil society organisations strongly criticised the passage of laws dealing with upcoming parliamentary elections without consultation with women’s groups and organisations.

The signatories to a statement issued on Sunday expressed “deep resentment” that the proposals of women’s groups were not heard “in relation to the electoral system to optimise enabling women to meaningfully and effectively participate in the upcoming House of Representatives elections.”

Mauritania opposition plans to boycott election

A coalition of Mauritania’s most prominent opposition parties says they will boycott next month’s presidential election, complaining that opposition leaders were not sufficiently consulted before the date was set.

The 17-party National Forum for Democracy and Unity said Sunday the June 21 election date, announced last month, was chosen unilaterally despite government-initiated talks between the two sides.

Church not for any candidate in Egypt's presidential polls: Coptic pope

Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II said on Sunday that the church would not support either candidate in the country's upcoming presidential race.

 

"I ask each citizen, Christian or Muslim, to read each candidate's electoral program and choose who he wants to be president," Tawadros said during an interview with Hamel El-Resala, a newspaper issued by the Catholic Church in Egypt.

 

The elections, scheduled for 26-27 May, will feature two candidates – ex-army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.

Dans une interview accordée à la chaîne Al Mutawasset, Rached Ghannouchi a assuré qu'un peuple qui vote à nouveau pour les symboles de l'ancien régime, n'est pas un peuple digne de respect. Le chef du mouvement Ennahdha, Rached Ghannouchi a assuré que si le gouvernement Jomâa parvient à réaliser de bons résultats, il ne serait pas contre le fait qu’il continue son travail même après les prochaines élections.

Ghannouchi a expliqué que cette période nécessite un gouvernement qui obtiendrait un large consensus car la Tunisie n’est pas encore prête à une expérience politique qui réunit des partis au pouvoir et d’autres du côté de l’opposition.

TNI chief conducts ‘blusukan’ ahead of presidential race

Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko conducted an impromptu visit on Friday, now popularly known as blusukan, to several military commands in Greater Jakarta to check on the army’s preparedness in securing the upcoming presidential election.

In the morning, Moeldoko, along with his entourage and journalists, headed to the Army’s Special Forces (Kopassus) headquarters in Cijantung, East Jakarta.

Le président de l’Instance Supérieure Indépendante pour les élections (ISIE), Chafik Sarsar a indiqué lors d’une interview accordée à l’Agence de presse Reuters que les prochaines élections pourraient se dérouler entre le 16 et le 23 novembre 2014  à condition que les politiciens trouvent un accord sur la tenue simultanée des présidentielles et législatives. 

Par ailleurs, Chafik Sarsar a mis en garde contre le danger des groupes fondamentalistes qui constitue, selon lui, la principale menace pour la tenue des élections.

In the ornate, wood-paneled theater that is Syria’s parliament, an unusual ritual has played out this week.

It is part of an electoral process designed to portray all the drama of a presidential race, while ensuring nobody seriously challenges the one name on the ballot paper that counts: Candidate Assad.

Every day at around noon, sheaves of documents in supersized envelopes have been delivered to Speaker Mohammad al-Lahham, who has solemnly unsealed them and read out the names of nominees for Syria’s presidential election next month.
