The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced partial results on Sunday with presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah in the lead.
IEC Chief Mohammad Yousuf Nuristani announced that Abdullah is in the lead with 44.4 percent, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai trails with 33.2 percent and Zalmai Rassoul with 10.4 percent.
"Today's announcement is not final," Nuristani emphasized. "There will be changes in the results as counting continues."
The partial result consisted of 49.67 percent of votes from 34 provinces, adding up to roughly 3.5 million votes nationwide.

According to our correspondent Abdiaziz Mohamed Ali Hajji, a car bomb blasted this morning in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district.
The bomb said to be an IED, was tied to the car of Members of Parliament and unexpectedly blasted as they were driving by Hamarweyne, a district only minutes away from the presidential palace.
The explosion instantly killed Isaak Mohamed Riino, a Member of Parliament whereby four others were seriously wounded.
