Bahrain’s main opposition has announced its decision to boycott the parliamentary and municipal council elections expected to be held in October this year.

This was announced at a Press conference held at Al Wefaq National Islamic Society headquarter. The opposition is represented by four societies; Al Wefaq, National Democratic Action Society (Waad), National Democratic Assembly, Progressive Democratic Tribune and Al Ekha National Society.

The representatives said that the boycott will not only be limited to the upcoming elections, but also any other future election if comprehensive political solutions is not found.

They vowed to continu with their peaceful protest to achieve their demands.

With this announcement, the election now largely will be dominated by pro-government political societies and independents in which Al Fateh group has already announced its participation.

The boycott will also increase the winning chances of independent candidates who will contest in constituencies dominated by the opposition.

The government has been calling upon the opposition to engage in talks through the National Consensus Dialogue that broke downlast year.
