TELUK INTAN, June 3 (Bernama) -- Good cooperation among the Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, which worked as a team, was among the factors that contributed to the coalition's victory in the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat by-election last Saturday.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the win was also due to the hard work of the party members in carrying out the campaign strategies in each polling district, thus enabling the party machinery to operate smoothly.
"We saw a very good experiment between Gerakan and MCA, which worked with one heart to ensure BN would triumph in the by-election," he said after a walkabout with the newly elected Teluk Intan Member of Parliament Datuk Mah Siew Keong at several locations, here, Tuesday.
Zambry said the role played by BN component parties representing the Indian community also contributed to BN's victory in the constituency after two terms being under the opposition.
He said achieving that win had been difficult as Teluk Intan had become a DAP stronghold but with good planning and strategies, victory became possible.
In the by-election on May 31, BN recaptured the Teluk Intan seat when Mah, 53, defeated DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, 27, by 238 votes when he garnered 20,157 votes against his challenger's 19,919 votes.
Zambry said with the win, all BN leaders and members needed to double their efforts in getting close to the people in Teluk Intan and solving their problems as best as possible.
Meanwhile, Mah said DAP should accept the by-election results graciously instead of blaming others for the party's defeat.
"The opposition have not stopped blaming others except themselves, for their failings. The by-election is over and we should get on with work for the people, and not be politicking anymore," he said.
Mah repeated his promise to work hard for Teluk Intan's development and the people's wellbeing.
"High-impact projects will take some time to materialise but small problems like roads with potholes, street lighting and clogged drains need to be solved as soon as possible," he said.
