ELECTION 2014: Initial results

Partial results from a number of sub-constituencies were announced this evening by the High National Elections Commission. The results are based on most votes being counted.

In many places candidates appear to be winning on a very low number of votes, reflecting the low turnout. In one, Awjila, the wining candidate has so far only taken three votes.  However, as he is the only candidate standing for the seat, and is thus assured of being chosen to represent the desert oasis town, it may be that almost no one bothered to go and vote.

In Suq Al-Juma, however, former Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur who was briefly Prime Minister-designate in 2012 is on course for a personal triumph, taking 13,565 votes so far on the 94 percent of ballots counted.  It looks likely that he will emerge as the member of the House of Representatives with the most votes, which should reinforce his position in Libyan politics even further.
