The House of Representatives (HoR) has selected members of committees to assist and oversee government performance.

After the process had been completed by the 127 members who attended,  Benghazi HoR member Aisa Aribi told the Libya Herald that the selection of committee members had been a mix of balloting and direct appointment.

For key committees that will monitor national security, defence, education, the economy and international affairs, the selection was made by vote.  For other committees that will watch the government’s work in areas including the media, displaced persons and national reconciliation,  members were appointed directly.

All the committees are now due to choose a chairman or chairwoman before beginning work immediately.  They will have the power to suggest legislation to be laid before the full parliament.

The committee system in the old General National Congress was arguably one of its real merits. Some, though not all the GNC committees, had highly motivated members who assembled competent staffers to support them in their work.
