US Secretary of State John Kerry has said the the international community would be united in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in Libya as well as Iraq and Syria. Speaking in London,  he said was “confident” that in the coming weeks there would be a “unanimous approach” to a “coordinated and effective response with respect to Libya”.

Kerry, who was meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond to discuss the Ukraine, Iran, IS and other foreign policy topics, did not elaborate on what he thought a coordinated response in Libya might include.

Concerning IS (also called Daesh), Kerry did say, “there is a unanimity now that is even more determined than it was previously to put the people in the places that they need to be to get the job done, to commit the resources, and to continue to put the pressure on Daesh in Iraq and into Syria, and wherever they may be.”

There are increasing accusations from Libyan political figures – proclaimed loudly in demonstrations in Benghazi on Friday – that the international community, in particular the US and the UK, have messed up their Libya policy and have opened the door to Islamist extremists to establish themselves in Libya.
