Through participation in a BRIDGE workshop in gender in elections in Djerba, Tunisia, members of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) and Libyan civil society have put the spotlight on the disproportionate role of women in elections and looked for ways to increase their influence in the future.

BRIDGE, which stands for Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections, is a modular development programme with a particular focus on electoral processes.

The five-day workshop, sponsored by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the European Union and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), was offered as part of a series of three BRIDGE workshops aimed at strengthening knowledge of Libyan electoral actors regarding critical electoral issues.

As part of the UN-brokered dialogue process aimed at installing a government of national unity in Libya and ending the current crisis, UNSMIL has also announced that it will organise a meeting of leading Libyan women as an additional supporting platform for the process.  The meeting is expected to take place next week, possibly also in Djerba.
