Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Wednesday with Al-Wafd Party leader El-Sayed El-Badawy along with other officials to discuss the latest crisis facing the party, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported

The internal political crisis rocking Egypt's oldest liberal party has been on the rise since late April.

Following the meeting with El-SIsi, El-Badawy told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that he will be meeting with the party's high board members to discuss El-Sisi's advice.

The party's high board will also discuss party elections that are scheduled to take place this Friday.

In April, at least 1,200 Wafd Party members, including leading figures in the centre right faction, convened in Sharqiya governorate, declaring that they have withdrawn confidence in party leader El-Badawy, accusing him of abusing his powers and maintaining absolute authority over all party decisions.

Last week, eight suspended high board members called for a withdrawal of confidence from party leader El-Badawy.

This is not the first internal fight to shake Egypt's Wafd Party in the last 10 years.

In January 2006, Wafd Party leader Noman Gomaa was ousted from his position when the high board withdrew confidence in him and appointed Mahmoud Abaza as interim leader.
