A government committee has agreed to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies to 205 from 206, in line with the view of the State Council, Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy has said.

The decision was agreed by the committee and the legislation department at the State Council.

El-Heneidy, who heads the committee responsible for amending the election laws, said he would notify the cabinet about the legislation department's approval of the amendments.

The department will then send their remarks on the draft amendments to the amendments committee, who will submit them to the cabinet for approval.

The Supreme Constitutional Council had ruled the Electoral Constituency Division law unconstitutional on 1 March, which led to the postponment of parliamentary elections that were due on 21 March.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a statement the same day urging the cabinet to amend it within a month.

The cabinet said in April that the elections would be postponed until after Ramadan for security and technical reasons.

El-Heneidy said the number of parliamentary seats would remain unchanged, 448 for individual seats and 120 for party list seats.
