The head of the Libyan armed forces, Major General Khalifa Hafter, has appointed the undersecretary at the Interior Ministry dealing with illegal immigration, Ahmed Baraka, to be in charge of security at Labraq airport.

The decision, announced today by the Beida office of the Libyan news agency LANA, is said to have been made three days ago. Under it, a special security force for the airport will be set up.

The airport has seen a number of security incidents, most recently ten days ago when a passenger assaulted the pilot of an Afriqiyah Airways flight to Tunis resulting in the airline temporarily suspending services there. But incidents took place last year. The bulk of the overstretched airport’s problems now are the result of it being the busiest in Libya. There have been numerous strikes over conditions and pay.

Nonetheless, security at the airport is seen as weak and fears of an attack by IS militants are very real in the present circumstances.
