President of the Egyptian Patriotic Movement Ahmed Shafiq on Thursday unresigned, and said that he would remain the head of the political party.
In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Shafiq however said that he would make "fundamental changes" in the party's leadership in all Egyptian governorates.
“I have decided to withdraw my resignation after the movement rejected it, and hope to continue working alongside my colleagues to serve our beloved country and act as proactive contributors, with other Egyptian citizens, to support our country," the statement read.
According to the statement, Shafiq aims to include youth and women in senior positions in Cairo, as well as in other governorates.
On June 14, Shafiq announced his resignation from his position as leader of the Egyptian Patriotic Movement, raising questions about his political future.
"I had to resign due to the difficult circumstances I had to face while doing my job," he said on Twitter last month.
Shafiq's resignation came after news spread that his interview with controversial TV host Abdel Rahim Ali on the Asema TV channel was stopped from airing following alleged "political pressure", according to media reports.
Briefly Egyptian prime minister in early 2011, Shafiq lost the presidential election to Mohamed Morsi in 2012. He has since been living in UAE, citing "security reasons".
Shafiq founded the Egyptian Patriotic Movement in December 2012.
