A small earthquake hit Marj, early this morning just hours after Prime Minister Abdullah Thinni was there for talks with the head of the Libyan armed forces, General Khalifa Hafter, aimed at rebuilding their working relationship. Last month, Thinni was prevented twice from flying from Labraq airport, allegedly on Hafter’s orders.

Hafter’s headarters are in Marj.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which occurred just after midnight, was 30 kilometres south east of the town. Registering 4.1 on the Richter scale, it was felt throughout much of northern Cyrenaica. There was little panic in Marj, however, even though older residents remember the 1963 earthquake which almost completely destroyed it, killing some 300 people. Modern Marj was rebuilt some five kilometres away.

The meeting between Thinni and Hafter appears to have been not much of a political earthquake. Including the Chief of Staff, Major-General Abdul Razzaq Nazhuri and Thninni’s Finance and Planning Minister Kamel Hassi, there were smiles for the cameras with the two reported to have discussed the fight against terrorism in Benghazi and elsewhere.
