The head of the General National Congress’ team at the UN-brokered Libya Dialogue negotiations, Awad Abdul Saddeq, flew back to Tripoli from Skhirat, Morocco, overnight to formally obtain the GNC’s list of names for the posts of prime minister and the two deputy prime ministers in the planned Government of National Accord plus the other two ministers who together will make up the interim Presidency Council.
Talks resumed in Skhirat yesterday on the names after delegates were in New York last Friday.
The GNC is expected to discuss the proposed names tomorrow, together with their continued involvement in the Dialogue and the House of Representatives’ decision yesterday to extend its mandate beyond 20 October.
Earlier, several members angrily dismissed a leaked list of names for the jobs of prime minister and deputy prime ministers, that supposedly came from the GNC. They said that it had not approved any names and that the Dialogue had to ignore any presented to it in the GNC’s name.
The leaked the GNC names for the prime ministership were said to include: Mahmoud Al-Fataisi, Al-Haramin Al-Haramin, Milad Khalifa, Saad Al-Obaidi, Osama Al-Said and Abdul-Nabi Shaki. For the deputy premiers, that names were: Mohamed Al-Amari, Musa Faraj, Saleh Al-Makhzoum, Khaled Al-Mishri, Ashrif Al-Shih and Abdulrahman Sewehli. Sewehli, a member of both the GNC and the House of Representatives, is also one of the GNC delegates at the Dialogue. Al-Shih is an adviser to the delegation. All the others in the second group are GNC members.
GNC nominations for the premiership are seen as a long shot. According to both HoR and Dialogue sources, Leon promised the HoR that the prime minister and one of the deputy premiers would come from its nominees, and the other deputy premier from the GNC – which is perhaps why the GNC’s suggestions for deputy premier is the more powerful list.
Meanwhile ambassadors and special envoys from a number of mainly western countries that have been actively involved in supporting the Dialogue again called on all the delegates to endorse the latest Draft before 20 October. They also called on them to choose names for the prime minister and deputies “with the upmost urgency”.
