Ali Treiki dies in Cairo

Ali Treiki, who twice served as the Qaddafi regime’s foreign minister, died in Cairo today, aged 77.

A career diplomat who rose through the ranks of the foreign ministry he served twice as foreign minister – between 1976 and 1982 and then again between 1984 and 1986 – and three times as Libyan ambassador to the UN, from 1982 to 1984, from 1986 to 1990, and again from 2003 to 2009. He then became president of the UN General Assembly for a year.

 

When the revolution broke out, he initially remained loyal to the regime but on 31 March 2011, he broke with Qaddafi and went to Egypt. In Cairo following day he called for Qaddafi to go and be replaced by a democracy.
