In a move seen as bolstering its power, the General National Congress has appointed 36 counsellors to Libya’s Supreme Court.

Among them, according to the GNC decree, is Ibrahim Anis Bashiah who has been asked to stay on as interim Attorney General. He has been serving at the same capacity since July 2014. However, the statement stressed that the post remains officially vacant.

Under Libyan constitutional law currently still place, all Supreme Court officials must be appointed by the nominally independent Supreme Judicial Council, and not by a legislative body such as the GNC.

However the GNC has taken to itself the right to do so. A week ago, Mohamed Al-Ghamoudi Al-Hafi was sworn into office as the head of the Libyan Supreme Court by the General National Congress (GNC) leader Nuri Abu Sahmain. He was appointed by the GNC in May as acting head of the court.
