In a move in support of the Tripoli-based General National Congress and the Khalifa Ghwell regime, Ghariyan’s council of elders and wisemen have announced their rejection of the Government of National Unity (GNA) led by Faiez Serraj. They were supported by a number of civil society activists and members of the local Saraya militia.

In a joint statement, they also said they would not accept any government that did not have the backing of all Libyans, that the country much follow Sharia law and that no fighting would be allowed to take place in Tripoli – a declaration very much at variance with the reality in the capital which saw clashes yesterday.

The declaration also said that municipal councils should not interfere in national politics.

Although recently Ghariyan has has sought to reach out to nearby towns backing the House of Representatives, it was previously a loyal supporter of the Ghwell regime and the Saraya brigade a firm supporter of the Libya Dawn military alliance that sustained the regime. The declaration is seen as a firm warning to Ghariyan municipal council not to change tack.
