Iran cancels plans to hold Feb. elections electronically: Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has called off plans to hold the two upcoming elections using electronic voting machines, Spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council (GC) Nejatollah Ebrahimian announced.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday, Ebrahimian pointed to a meeting of the GC earlier in the day and said the issue of using electronic ballot boxes in the upcoming elections was raised in the session and the majority of the GC members voiced their opposition to the plan.
Turkish deputy PM rules out early election talk
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has dismissed hearsay suggesting it intended to hold a new snap election, while arguing that such a move would sabotage the potential offered by “four years of uninterrupted service.”
Comments by Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş on Jan. 20 followed reports claiming the AKP would initiate an early election if it failed to gain support from the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on constitutional amendments which would pave the way for the country’s transition into a presidential system.
Announcement of election schedule illegal: SJM
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Social Justice Movement (SJM) on Thursday termed the Independent Election Commission (IEC)’s date announcement for the parliamentary and district council elections as “illegal and unjustifiable.”
The civil society group said the announcement had hurt people’s trust over the unity government regarding reforms in the county’s electoral system and holding new elections by fresh election commissioners under a transparent system.
Leader encourages large voter turnout
Tehran, Jan 20, IRNA – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Wednesday urged preparing the ground for large turn out of people for the upcoming February elections.
He made the remarks in a meeting with the officials in charge of holding the upcoming elections in the country.
Majlis (parliament) and Assembly of Experts elections are scheduled for February 25, 2016.
Change in voting procedure: Amendment passed amid opposition’s uproar
The Sindh Assembly, despite a vehement protest by the opposition and thin attendance on the treasury benches, passed a law to hold the election of mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen, vice-chairmen of local bodies and candidates on reserved seats through a ‘show of hands’.
Earlier, the process was to be held through secret ballot.
Moving an amendment in the Sindh Local Government Act 2013, senior education and parliamentary affairs minister, Nisar Khuhro, said the move would make the election process transparent.

SC orders vote verification in Khawaja Asif's NA-110
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered verification of votes in Sialkot's NA-110 constituency, where Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had emerged victorious in the 2013 general elections.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali had taken up an application filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf's (PTI) Usman Dar, challenging the election of Asif in NA-110.
NA-218 by-elections: Makhdooms record 13th victory from Hala
The Makhdooms of Hala crushed their opponents in the by-elections for their home constituency of NA-218 Matiari on Monday, recording the 13th consecutive victory from the area.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea announced on Monday his support for his rival Change and Reform bloc chief MP Michel Aoun as president after weeks of speculation.
He declared during a joint press conference with the MP at Maarab: “I declare, after thorough assessment among the LF, the nomination of MP Michel Aoun as president.”
“The LF does not take impulsive or spontaneous decisions, but takes them after deep reflection,” he noted in an indirect reference to Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc chief MP Fouad Saniora.

Bassil Says Legislative Polls Can be Held as FPM Stages 'Proportional' Party Vote
Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil stressed Sunday that “nothing justifies postponing the parliamentary polls,” as the FPM held unprecedented internal elections based on the “proportional representation” system.
Bassil voiced his remarks during an inspection tour that saw him visit Akkar, Baalbek-Hermel, Jezzine, Jbeil, Keserwan, Beirut and Aley.
The FPM's polls were aimed at electing regional committees.
Kılıçdaroğlu re-elected as CHP eyes new era with new faces
Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was re-elected as chair of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for his fourth consecutive term at his the party’s convention over the weekend, saying he aimed to renew the CHP’s management with “more new and young faces.”
Kılıçdaroğlu received the votes of 990 delegates out of 1,238, running alone as his sole contender İzmir deputy Mustafa Balbay failed to garner the required number of signatures to be a candidate.
Senate to accept citizens’ complaints against MPs
ISLAMABAD: The Senate is set to implement a new code of conduct which envisages serious penalties for violators including suspension of house membership.
The upper house of parliament passed a draft code of conduct for senators with a majority vote on Thursday. Only three senators, two from JUI-F and one from the ruling PML-N, opposed the initiative. They argued that it would open floodgates of complaints which could in turn tarnish the image of politicians.

IEC Chairman Yousuf Nuristani told a news conference that the panel made all technical preparations to conduct the election process on October 15, 2016.
He promised mistakes of the 2014 presidential vote would not be repeated. The coming polls would be fully transparent, he assured, claiming the panel had learnt a lot from past experience.
