La policía turca ha detenido a 22 académicos –y busca a otros 5 más- a los que se acusa de “propaganda terrorista” por firmar un manifiesto crítico con la política del Gobierno en el sudeste kurdo del país. Además, la justicia ha iniciado una investigación criminal sobre otros 130 por el mismo motivo y los centros educativos han abierto expedientes a decenas de profesores que habían incluido su nombre en la lista de firmantes.
Netanyahu declared Likud leader for seventh term
The Likud’s election committee decided Thursday to endorse a decision by the party’s internal court to cancel the February 23 leadership race and declare Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the uncontested winner.
The decision ended a legal dispute over whether to hold a single candidate Likud primary once it emerged that Netanyahu was running unchallenged.
Committee chairman, former Haifa District Court judge Menahem Neeman, said Netanyahu would be the party’s candidate for prime minister in the next election and no leadership contest could be held beforehand.

Parliamentary body affirms constitutional amendments, laws for electoral reforms
ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms on Wednesday gave a nod to constitutional amendments and amendments in electoral laws that needed in electoral reforms package for transparency and fairness in the general elections.
The members expressed its satisfaction over the pace of working of the committee to proposed electoral reforms for the transparency in the election process but still not in hurry to complete the task of bringing the electoral reform package in Parliament for the legislation.
Crisis if parliamentary polls not held next year: Danish
KABUL (Pajhwok): The second vice-president on Thursday said the government was committed to holding parliamentary and district council elections next year based on reforms to be applied.
Sarwar Danish in a message to a gathering in Kabul said the country would face widespread problems if the elections were not held next year.
The gathering was arranged by the Afghan Civil Society Election Network (ACSEN) about electoral reforms.
Timor Hakimyar, a member of ACSEN’s leadership board, called electoral reforms as vital for transparent future elections.
Ten candidates register for by-elections on first day
KUWAIT: Ten male candidates yesterday applied to the elections committee, filing nominations to run for by-elections in the third electoral constituency, said informed sources, pointing out that nominations would be accepted until Jan 22 and elections would be held on Feb 20.

Report: LF Informs March 14 its Intention to Back Aoun for Presidency, Mustaqbal and Kataeb Reject
The Lebanese Forces has informed the March 14 alliance that the LF would back Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun for the presidency, An Nahar daily reported on Monday.
The newspaper said that LF lawmaker George Adwan made the announcement on his party's serious intention to back Aoun during a meeting that was held by the coalition’s leaders on Sunday night.
Adwan urged them “to deal with this option calmly,” it said.
President Erdoğan says press freedom not unlimited
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a statement on Friday to mark Working Journalists Day and said a country’s democracy is as strong as the extent to which its media and journalists are free to do their jobs, but added that exercising that the ability to exercise that freedom should not be construed as constituting exemption from responsibilities.
Hold elections before reforms, Gilani tells govt
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Coordination Council of Political and Jihadi parties on Sunday said the government should announce the schedule for parliamentary and district council elections before bringing electoral reforms.
Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani, the council spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive chat the announcement of dates for the elections was more important than changes to the election commissions.
Gilani favoured holding elections first calling it principle of democracy, saying reforms could be introduced in the next stage.
ECP summons PB-50 candidates in Islamabad
QUETTA: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned all the four candidates who contested the by-election on a Balochistan Assembly constituency (PB-50 Turbat-3) to Islamabad on Jan 11.
Provincial Election Commissioner in Balochistan Syed Sultan Bayazid said here on Thursday that the ECP had also summoned the district returning officer and returning officer.
Swat women assembly elects speaker, deputy
MINGORA: Tabassum Adnan was elected the first speaker and Ms Sajida deputy speaker of the first women assembly of Swat here on Thursday.
The election for speaker and deputy speaker of the assembly was held in pleasant environment in which members of women assembly used their right to vote.
The women assembly was formed under the Aurat Foundation’s voice and accountability programme, Awaz, with women’s representations from all 67 union councils of Swat district.
New election commission to manage future polls: CEO
KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Thursday said next year’s parliamentary and district council elections would be managed by a new election commission and stressed that mistakes in previous elections would not repeated.

Turkey’s parliament speaker preparing for new charter talks
Turkish Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman said on Jan. 8 he would head the conciliation commission and send letters to party leaders, foreseeing that a new constitution would likely be issued.
“I will head the conciliation commission and the commission will determine its working principles itself. I think that a new constitution will be issued,” said Kahraman during a press conference, adding he would send letters to the leaders of all four parties in the Turkish parliament.
PML-N’s Baba sweeps PP-89 by-election
TOBA TEK SINGH: According to unofficial results of 147 polling stations, PML-N’s Pir Ali Baba won by-poll for PP-89 by a margin of 20825 votes.
He secured 55894 votes while independent candidate Sonia Ali Raza got 35,609 votes. The turnout was 56 per cent.
Mr Baba (whose actual name is Qutab Ali Shah), is the son of former MPA Pir Ibrar Husain and nephew of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Runner-up Ms Raza is daughter of late MPA Makhdoom Ali Raza and niece of former Punjab minister Makhdoom Mukhtar Hussain.
