The Cabinet approved three bills on Wednesday that could allow the often-postponed parliamentary elections to finally take place. Ministers sent the draft laws to the State Council for review before they’re put to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for final approval.

The bills include the Political Participation Law, the Parliamentary Elections Law and the Electoral Constituency Law.

El Gobierno de Egipto ha aprobado enmiendas a dos leyes que regirán las próximas elecciones parlamentarias y que habían sido rechazadas por inconstitucionales, lo que supuso el retraso de la votación.

Está previsto que un comité de expertos nombrado por el Ejecutivo revise hoy esos cambios, que posteriormente deberán ser ratificados por el presidente egipcio, Abdelfatah al Sisi.

Catholic Church Warns Albanians Against Vote-Selling

“We appeal to the conscience of citizens not to vote for candidates who are known for their criminal or corrupt past," an open letter from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference said on Tuesday.

“Even an election boycott or a blank ballot is an option and a voice that must be heard and a right that must be used in specific conditions. If any of the candidates doesn’t fulfil the criteria, then a boycott becomes a moral duty,” the letter said.

La mayoría de los colegios electorales sudaneses, exceptuando los ubicados en dos estados del centro y oeste del país, cerraron sus puertas hoy en el cuarto y último día de los comicios generales para dar comienzo mañana al recuento de votos. 

Las elecciones presidenciales y parlamentarias comenzaron el pasado lunes en todo el país, y estaba previsto que se celebrasen en tres días, aunque se prolongaron finalmente una jornada más en todo el país. 

Albanian opposition fears electoral rigging in the local government polls

In Albania, the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha expressed his concern  about what he considers as a threat imposed by the government on the standards and the lack of a calm pre election climate.

Basha suggests that a larger participation of observers would assist in monitoring the process and avoiding the consequences that may come from electoral fraud.

Reports on detention of activists in Sudan increase

Various sources in Sudan reported the detention of a number of anti-election campaigners during the past few days. 

According to the Darfur Bar Association, human rights lawyer Musa Zakariya Juju and his client were detained in Khartoum on Sunday. Lawyer Ali Saeed Kuku was held at his office in El Sawra district in Omdurman. University teaching assistant Khaled Khalil Musa, and teacher Khamees Hamdan were taken from their homes in El Sawra.

‘Paramilitary forces cast their vote more than once in North Darfur’

Militiamen reportedly voted much more than once in Saraf Umra. The ballot boxes at the Aradeiba polling centre in Saraf Umra locality were stolen today. Government-backed militiamen are threatening to kill people in Birkat Seira and surroundings, if they do not vote for incumbent President Al Bashir and the local candidate of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP).

Five polling centres closed in Central Darfur’s Garsila

The National Election Commission (NEC) has announced the closure of five of the 16 polling centres in Garsila, capital of Wadi Salih locality, because of a delay in the arrival of voting materials.

NEC spokesman El Hadi Mohammed Ahmed said that 160 out of 7,000 polling centres distributed over 18 states witnessed logistical problems on Monday, the first voting day.

20 South Darfuris detained for refusing to vote

Security officers detained 20 people, most of them women, in South Darfur's Gireida on Tuesday, when they refused to leave the Zakat Chamber and cast their votes instead. Security forces in North Darfur’s Kutum knocked on house doors, ordering the residents to vote.

A relative of one of the detainees told Radio Dabanga that a force of security agents, led by the head of security of Gireida locality, told a group of poor women and men applying for financial support at the Zakat (Islamic alms) Chamber, to move to the polling centres and vote for President Al Bashir.  

Local council elections go unnoticed in Tehran

Tehran — a metropolis with 7.8 million inhabitants, 22 districts and 354 neighborhoods — conducted its fourth set of neighborhood council elections in March. More than 13,000 candidates ran for office, and according to high-ranking municipality officials, the number is a significant increase compared with 2009 elections. Still, although voter turnout was significant, there are doubts about the effectiveness of the councils in the framework of urban policymaking.

 

Herzog denies reports of secret meeting with Netanyahu over coalition

Opposition leader Isaac Herzog continued to deny reports that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a secret meeting last week in which they discussed the possibility of forming a national unity government.

"It didn't happen and did not take place. Nothing about it was suggested and there was no discussion," Herzog said on Wednesday to Channel 2.

African civil society raise concern over AU monitoring of Sudan election

Albanian opposition leader accuses the majority of running people with criminal records for the local elections

The leader of the Democratic Party in Albania, Lulzim Basha accused today the two governing allies of running people with criminal records for the June 21 local government elections.

During the meeting of the democrat parliamentary group, Basha said that decriminalization is a decisive moment. Basha said that PM Edi Rama is not able to separate himself from people with criminal records and not defend them when they appear in front of the prosecution and police.

Al menos tres civiles han muerto y nueve militares de las fuerzas de paz han resultado gravemente heridos por un atentado suicida en Malí, aseguró un portavoz de Naciones Unidas. El suceso se produjo en la base de la ONU en la ciudad de Ansongo. 

«Un vehículo trató de penetrar en el campamento y hubo una explosión», aseguró Olivier Salgado a Reuters por teléfono desde la capital, Bamako.

Las elecciones generales de tres días en Sudán se alargaron hasta el jueves por la escasa participación en estos comicios que debería ganar el presidente saliente Omar Al Bashir, al tiempo que se retiraron dos candidatos que denunciaron irregularidades.

La Comisión Electoral decidió postergar un día el cierre de los comicios presidenciales y parlamentarios en este gran país pobre de África, gobernado desde hace más de un cuarto de siglo por el general Bashir, de 71 años
