No action against PKR protesters, says Johari

PETALING JAYA:  In response to recent demonstrations by grassroots members against PKR elections outside party headquarters, Datuk Johari Abdul said that action will not be taken against them as they are merely exercising their freedom to assemble.

“We believe in lawful assembly. It is a citizen’s right as long as they do not cause disturbance in the neighbourhood. Many of them are youths and this is good training for them,” he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters on Wednesday.

While still not officially announcing his candidacy, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has used a gathering with executives from his ruling party’s local branches to publicly instruct them to begin campaigning for the upcoming presidential elections.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has arrived at the final point with regard to nominating its candidate for the presidency, Erdoğan said on June 11, delivering a speech at a meeting with AKP-member mayors from across the country.

On March 3, 2013, as a means of curbing illegal immigration, the Civil Status Authority implemented a ban on issuing identity cards to those unable to present legal documents proving their Yemeni nationality.

According to the ban, the provision of Yemeni identity cards for Muwaladeen (“mixed race”—in this case being the child of a Yemeni national and a foreign national) born in the Horn of Africa is to be stopped. However, Muwaladeen born in the Gulf, Europe, and Asia, provided their fathers were born in Yemen, can still be issued identity cards.

IEC To Provide Candidates Runoff Result Sheets

Based on a recent decision undertaken by the Independent Election Commission (IEC), each runoff candidate would be provided a copy of the result sheet after voting ends.

In the first round of elections there were four copies of the result sheets, of which none was given to the presidential candidates. Originally, the result sheets were divided between the IEC headquarter, IEC provincial offices, the observers and pasted on the walls of polling centers.

Respublika parliamentary faction has new leader

The leader of "Respublika" parliamentary faction became Maksat Sabirov. This was reported by the press office of the faction.

According to the data, Nazarali Aripov today at an extraordinary meeting of the faction handed over the power to the deputy head of the faction Maksat Sabirov.

Note, 10 members of 23 members remained in the faction, who came to parliament on "Respublika" party lists.

Potential voters in the upcoming July 9 presidential election would likely choose a candidate linked to the parties of their regional leaders, a survey shows.

The survey, which was conducted by the United Data Center, shows that mayors and governors represent political parties strongholds and potential voters in certain areas would be more likely to back either presidential figures Prabowo Subianto or Joko “Jokowi” Widodo based on party preferences.

750 youths ‘joined PKK’ in one year

Some 750 youths under the age of 18 joined the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party(PKK) forces in one year, according to a fresh report by a police agency. 

The report said the PKK’s high school and youth organizations, the urban arm and educational support branch, also known as EDEV, were used in accelerating the process of recruiting youths and taking them to the mountains for training.

LAHORE: The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) has found rigged votes in the record of ballot papers from NA-118, Lahore, The Express Tribune has learnt.

According to a report submitted by the authority to the election tribunal, the record of only 68 of 251 polling stations in the constituency were provided to NADRA. The total number of votes here was 46,118 and only 15,835 voters’ thumbprints were verified.

PM proposes parliamentary committee on electoral reforms

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday proposed setting up a parliamentary committee to finalise recommendations on electoral reforms and submit its report within three months.

In a letter addressed to Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the prime minister said given the importance of the matter, the parliamentary committee may prepare comprehensive recommendations to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
