Last Wednesday’s national elections in Indonesia produced an inconclusive result. None of the 10 political parties likely to enter the legislature will be able to claim mass endorsement. There will be an acrimonious tussle within the ruling elite as these parties seek to position themselves for the presidential election on July 9.

Eleven sentenced to 5 yrs in prison in Bahrain

A court in Bahrain has sentenced eleven anti-regime protesters to five years in prison as pressure on dissidents mounts in the country.

On Monday, the court convicted the men of taking part in an unauthorized demonstration in a village, south of the capital Manama last year. The prosecution also convicted the Bahrainis of assaulting police during the rally.

The incident marks the latest in a series of harsh sentences handed down to protesters in the Persian Gulf nation.

Afghan voters turn to social media to fight fraud

KABUL: Fed-up with the massive rigging that took place in previous elections, Afghan voters have been using social media to highlight alleged fraud, and officials are starting to take notice.

Smartphone videos of ballots being stuffed at breakneck speed, voter harassment outside polling booths, and papers scattered in the street would raise serious questions about a vote’s viability in the West.

In Afghanistan, bringing such episodes to light is also seen as a major step in overcoming the corruption that has dogged every election since the fall of the Taliban.

Sudan’s rebel alliance rejects government call for national dialogue

The rebel alliance of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) Sunday has reiterated its rejection to take part in the national dialogue, saying the government is escalating military operations instead of declaring cessation of hostilities and making confidence-building measures.

The rebel SRF, which says that a constitutional conference must lead to restore a democratic regime in Sudan, demands that such national process intervene after holding direct talks with them to negotiate a cessation of hostilities and open humanitarian access to civilians in the rebel areas.

MQM to present resolution against PPO in Sindh Assembly today

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Faisal Subzwari said on Monday that his party will present a resolution against the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO) in Sindh Assembly today and raised concern over the missing party workers, Geo News reported.

While talking to the media before the Sindh Assembly session today, the leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Faisal Subzwari told that his party wants to maintain a satisfactory working relationship along with representing the opposition.

Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has predicted release of political detainees including members of the armed groups in order to encourage them to take part in the national dialogue.

While the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) demanded releasing political detainees, saying the government’s decisions in this regard are not credible.

C’est aujourd’hui (NDLR : hier lundi 14 avril courant) que les pourparlers entre les différents protagonistes politiques devraient être lancés en début de soirée, après un léger retard.

Un report de quelques heures dû essentiellement à des réajustements de dernière minute, faits de part et d’autre des négociateurs au sein de leur délégation pour booster au maximum les chances d’aboutir enfin à un consensus.

PKR polls: Others have factions but I’m open about it, says Saifuddin

PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president hopeful Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said his contenders, incumbent deputy president Azmin Ali and Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, have factions.

“If you follow them closely (on their campaign trail), you can see their own followers.

"That is also considered a pact, only I chose to announce it openly,” he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters here on Monday.

On Sunday, Azmin warned against formation of alliances, groupings and cartels, stressing it would not augur well for the future of the party.
