Cabinet to meet to decide on ideal date for elections – Debate rages over constitutional court ruling

The Cabinet is expected to hold an extraordinary session today to discuss an ideal date for the parliamentary election following the constitutional court’s ruling that scrapped the National Assembly as the debate over the verdict continues among various political groups. The Cabinet may announce the election date today after approving a decree to dissolve the Assembly or postpone a final decision until the beginning of next week.

Marzouki, delegation of Ennahdha NCA bloc discuss ways to reach compromise on draft constitution

ssues related to the draft Constitution and ways to reach compromise were discussed at a meeting held Tuesday between Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki and members of Ennahdha National Constituent Caucus in the National Constituent Assembly (NCA).

At the end of the meeting, President of Ennahdha bloc Sahbi Atig stressed the need to find a common ground on conflicting issues raised after the submission of the draft Constitution, the Presidency of the Republic said in a press release.

UN told that Libya’s transition will remain difficult and that Political Isolation Law violates civil rights.

With the June 23 election only days way, the Albanian government has approved a decision to raise wages and pensions by 6 per cent in a bid to win votes for the ruling Democratic Party.

“We have approved in principle the increase of wages and pensions by 6 per cent, which will come into force after the election,” Prime Minister Sali Berisha said last Thursday.

Taking a swipe at his main rival in the June 23 general election, Mr Berisha said that the Socialist leader, Edi Rama, “never mentions salaries but only taxes and their increase”.

Mohammad Reza Aref has withdrawn his candidacy from Iran’s June 14 presidential election in order to give the reformist camp a better chance to win. The former vice president announced his decision to drop out of the election in a statement issued late on Monday, in which he said the decision was made after he received suggestions from former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, who advised to stand aside.

Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has expressed optimism on the imminent demise of the Sudanese regime to bring what it says was two decades of turbulence, corruption and civil wars to an end.

The PCP’s political secretary Kamal Omer declared on Monday that opposition forces are united around the goal of toppling the regime led by president Omer Hassan al-Bashir and said that the opposition is setting up coordination committees among grassroots to bring about an unprecedented breakthrough.
