Former foreign minister, Ali Akbar Velayati, said the Coalition of Three will endorse chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, provided that top clerics throw their weight behind him.

The Coalition of Three brings together Velayati, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

Jalili, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, chairman of the Expediency Council, signed up on the final day of the registration for the June 14 vote on Saturday.

Registration of hopefuls for Iran’s presidential vote enters final day

The official registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election has entered its fifth and final day, with over 360 individuals having signed up for the race so far.

A number of prominent figures, including Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who is a member of the Coalition of Three, and Vice-Speaker of Iran’s Majlis Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard, registered on Saturday.

The political parties taking part in the national dialogue initiated by the Presidency of the Republic agreed on Friday to keep the October 23, 2011, electoral system with some modifications.

"We agreed to maintain the rule of "the strongest will remain" applied during the elections of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) with some improvements", Republican Party Secretary-General Maya Jribi told TAP news agency.

Hashemi, Rahim-Mashaei register for presidential vote

Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and head of the Secretariat of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei have registered to run in Iran’s presidential race.

Former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani and Rahim-Mashaei signed up for the June vote in the final moments of registration day for Iran’s 11th presidential election.

Incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the process of registration at the Interior Ministry.

Reformists rejected as city council candidates

Iranian media report that a large number of reformist candidates have been pronounced ineligible to run in the city council elections.

Mohsen Hashemi, Masoumeh Ebtekar and Parvin Ahmadinejad are among the many well known faces in Iranian politics who were disqualified, according to ILNA.

Mohsen Hashemi said he has not received an official disqualification letter from the Supervisory Committee.

“Our experts have found 25,874 records that are suspected of being duplications in the voters’ list for the elections,” Bledi Cuci, Socialist undersecretary for electoral affairs, said Thursday.

“Our latest extract has also found that 352,237 voters that are recorded in the list do not have an exact address,” he added.

According to Cuci, the most problematic regions where voters do not have an exact address is Tirana, followed by Vlora, Shkodra and Korca.

The poll, which was carried out for the TV station by the Italian Piepoli Institute, said 49 per cent of repondents would vote for the Socialist-led coalition in the elections, well ahead of 40 per cent for the centre-right ruling Democratic Party coalition.

The New Democratic Spirit, a splinter group from the ruling Democrats, headed by former President Bamir Topi, would receive 5.5 per cent of the votes and another 5.5 per cent would go to the nationalist Red and Black Alliance.

Security groups press reformist candidates to drop out

Reformist candidates in the municipal elections are being threatened against running, an opposition website reports.

The Kaleme website writes that reformist candidates are being summoned by security bodies to be dissuaded from running in the elections.

“While numerous reformists, critics, and progressive former leaders of the country are participating in the city council elections and have officially registered their names, these days they are being contacted and told not to engage in elections activities,” Kaleme writes.

Kuwait emir insult case: 68 face prosecution

Kuwait’s public prosecution is set to investigate a number of people for allegedly undermining the status of the country’s emir.

The 68 men and women have been referred to the prosecution by the state security agency amid suspicions that they helped disseminate a controversial speech given by opposition leader Musallam Al Barrak for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, local Arabic daily Al Jareeda reported on Thursday.

El director de la Comisión Electoral de Pakistán (CEP), Fajruddin G. Ebrahim ha comunicado al líder del ejército, el General Kiyani que el plan de seguridad previsto para las elecciones del 11 de mayo es insuficiente, ya que considera que la presencia del ejército puede acabar con las posibilidades de fraude y violencia. De acuerdo a la CEP, hay 12.716 colegios electorales considerados "sensibles".

Egypt's opposition forms committee to discuss stance on elections

The National Salvation Front will form a committee within the coming days to discuss its stance on the upcoming parliamentary elections, Magdi Hamdan, a member of the front, said on Wednesday.

The front held a meeting earlier today to discuss whether it will contest or boycott the elections, Hamdan, a member of the Democratic Front Party, told Aswat Masriya.

The meeting was held at the Democratic Front Party headquarters.
