Abu Dhabi: The Supreme Court’s state security court on Tuesday set May 13 and 14 as the next dates in the trial of a group of Emiratis charged with threatening national security.

At the end of a five-hour session on Tuesday, Presiding Judge Falah Al Hajiri said the court will hear the defence deliberations of the rest of the accused at the next hearing.

Sudan’s parliament suspends activities to push for military mobilisation

Sudan’s National Assembly has decided to suspend its sessions next week in order to enable lawmakers to head to their constituencies and lead a mobilisation campaign in support of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in its ongoing battle with rebel groups which have stepped up their military activities in recent months.

The national assembly speaker, Ahmed Ibrahim al-Tahir directed MPs to go to their states and meet with the local governments in order to mobilise youth to support SAF.

"We want people to defend themselves and offer self-sacrifice” al-Tahir said.

Sudan NCP endorses proposal to extend Bashir’s mandate for 5 years

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) approved a proposal on Tuesday aimed at amending its statute and extending the term of president Omer Hassan al-Bashir from four to five years.

NCP’s secretary of women’s affairs, Samia Ahmed Mohamed, told reporters in Khartoum that the proposal will be submitted to the Shura Council, the only organ entitled to amend the statute of the party.

Such amendment will mean the extension of Bashir’s leadership of the party for an additional year.

MP wants citizenship for non-Muslims too

KUWAIT: MP Khalil Al-Saleh yesterday submitted a draft law calling to amend the nationality law in a way to allow granting citizenship to non-Muslims, saying taking the religion factor in nationality affairs amounts to a form of discrimination. The Shiite lawmaker said that the Kuwaiti nationality law, first introduced in 1959, did not stipulate religious conditions in granting citizenship to foreigners. However, an amendment introduced in 1982 required that foreigners who may be granted Kuwaiti citizenship should be Muslim by birth or have embraced Islam for at least five years.

El movimiento responde a lo pactado en el proceso de paz con Ankara

La retirada anunciada de los rebeldes kurdos del Partido de los Trabajadores del Kurdistán (PKK) de Turquía hacia el norte de Irakacaba de iniciarse, según ha anunciado el dirigente del principal partido pro-kurdo de Turquía.

"Sabemos que el movimiento [de repliegue] de los combatientes ha comenzado", ha señalado Selahattin Dermitas, copresidente del Partido por la Paz y la Democracia (BDP).

An amendment to the conflict of interest law in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) transfers authority in the cases to a parliament commission, a change that analysts and NGOs say could open the political sector up to corruption.

Currently, the Central Elections Commission is the authority in determining officials' involvement in conflict of interest.

The amendments have been passed by the state government, but need to be overturned by parliament, analysts said.

La liste des 108 candidats présélectionnés à l’Isie pour être auditonnés le vendredi 10 mai par la commission parlementaire de tri est enfin publiée.
Après plusieurs déclarations et communiqués rectificatifs de la part de la présidence de l’ANC, le site web de la Constituante a révélé, hier, les noms des 108 candidats dont seront retenus 36.
Les noms de ces derniers seront soumis au vote des constituants lors d’une séance plénière pour le choix définitif de 9 membres qui constitueront le conseil directoire de l’Instance supérieure indépendante des élections.

A group of political movements launched on Wednesday a campaign entitled ‘Hanharrarhom’ (We Will Free Them), established to organise popular pressure to release detainees arrested for taking part in revolutionary events.

The launch of the campaign was announced during a press conference held for political detainees. Political movements such as the Al-Tayar Al-Sha’aby (Popular Current), 6 April Democratic Front and the Free Front for Peaceful Change took part in the press conference.

Iran’s election machinery swings into motion

The registration of presidential candidates for the June election in Iran began today, Tuesday May 7, and will continue until Saturday.

Interior Minister Mostafa Najjar announced that the Guardian Council will decide on the eligibility of candidates during five days of deliberation that begin on May 12.

For the first time, the presidential election will take place at the same time as municipal elections.

The registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election, which is due on June 14, has officially begun. The official registration began on Tuesday morning on the order of the Iranian Interior Ministry. Hopefuls have five days, until May 11, to sign up for the presidential election.

More than 20 political figures from across Iran’s political spectrum have so far announced their intention to run for president, with the majority being from the principlist camp.

El líder del opositor Pacto Popular (PP), Anwar Ibrahim, ha convocado una gran manifestación para el próximo miércoles en Kuala Lumpur para denunciar el fraude que supuestamente se cometió en las elecciones legislativas celebradas el pasado domingo en Malasia, que dieron la victoria al gobernante Frente Nacional (FN).

 

   "Debemos tener el derecho a expresarnos adecuadamente en los espacios públicos --como los estadios-- y en sus alrededores", ha dicho el líder opositor, en declaraciones recogidas por la cadena británica BBC.
