Mali: UN approves new UN peacekeeping force, Minusma

The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution to create a UN peacekeeping force for Mali.

The 12,600-strong force is intended incorporate some 6,000 West African soldiers already in the country.

The resolution was proposed by France, which intervened militarily in January to drive out Islamist militants from Mali's northern desert region.

The UN force is to deploy at the beginning of July before planned nationwide elections.

Algeria: Belmoctar given death sentence for Amenas siege

TUNIS, APRIL 24 - Algeria's criminal court on Tuesday condemned Moctar Belmoctar to death in absentia for his part in the bloody siege at a gas field in Amenas in January. Belmoctar, believed to be the mastermind behind the attack, had been presumed dead after an air raid in Mali, although France has never confirmed this and his fate remains shrouded in mystery.

 El Tribunal Supremo de Lahore ha dado finalmente 'luz verde' este lunes al exprimer ministro Raja Pervez Ashraf para que pueda presentarse a las elecciones del próximo 11 de mayo, según ha informado el diario paquistaní 'Dawn'.

   La semana pasada, un tribunal electoral descalificó a Ashraf por "violar el principio de transparencia" tras declarar que los documentos presentados para su nominación eran inválidos, motivo por el que prohibió su participación en el proceso, decisión que fue apelada por el exprimer ministro.

The Wolesi Jirga on Monday approved two important articles of the proposed election law concerning the Single Non-Transferable Vote (SNTV) system and ballot counts at voting centres.

The draft law, having 17 chapters and 67 articles, was referred to Wolesi Jirga -- or lower house of parliament -- in December 2012.

Close to 50% of eligible voters cast their ballot in Iraq's provincial elections today amid tight security.

Election officials said including results from a special vote a week earlier for members of the armed forces, total participation would be more than 51%.

Official preliminary results are not expected for several days, but the local vote will be a key test of political parties' strength before the parliamentary elections in 2014.

 Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Barisan Nasional election candidate list is final and no more changes will be allowed.

He urged all component parties to throw their support for the candidates selected by the party leaders. He said he understands their frustration but urged them not to do anything rash.

 Un tribunal electoral paquistaní ha rechazado este lunes la apelación presentada por el exprimer ministro Raja Pervez Ashraf y ha dictaminado que no podrá presentarse a las elecciones del próximo 11 de mayo, según ha informado el diario paquistaní 'Dawn'.

   Ashraf tenía planeado presentarse candidato a un escaño de la Asamblea Nacional en Gujar Jan, en donde ya había ganado dos elecciones. Un familiar de Raja Jawaid Ijlas, el oponente del exprimer ministro en dicha circunscripción, ha acusado a Ashraf de malversación de fondos.

Two Iraqi Sunni Muslim candidates were killed less than a week before local elections that will be a test of the country's political stability after U.S. troops left more than a year ago.

The election on Saturday to select provincial council members will measure Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's political muscle against Shi'ite and Sunni rivals before the parliamentary election in 2014.

KPU mulls amending rule on campaign ad

The General Elections Commission (KPU) is considering amending its 2013 regulation that requires all media outlets to provide equal coverage of every legislative candidate.

Some organizations and politicians have said the regulation would shackle press freedom.

According to Article 46 (1), any media outlets that do not provide equal portion of duration or space to each legislative hopeful will receive sanctions ranging from written warnings to publication or broadcasting bans.
