AMISOM Trains Somali Government Officials in Election Management

Senior officials of the Federal Government of Somalia have completed a two-week course on elections management, at the Kofi Annan International Peace Training Centre, in Accra Ghana.

The training facilitated by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), aimed at equipping the participants with the principles and processes in elections management, ahead of planned elections in 2016.

 Sudanese journalists on social media sites expressed surprise at a presidential decree issued by President Omer Hassan al-Bashir on Thursday declaring June 26 of each year as the National Media Day which coincides with the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture and the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to decree the minister of Information Ahmed Bilal Osman will deliver a speech on Friday during the celebration.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) is conducting discussions with the National Liberation and Justice Party (NLJP) former Darfurian rebel faction to reintegrate the federal government after suspending its participation .

On 17 June, the NLJP of Tijani al-Sissi decided to suspend its political partnership with the (NCP) and to withdraw from the government. The former rebel group accused the ruling party of not honouring a political agreement between the two parties.

The left-wing coalition headed by Prime Minister Edi Rama won or is leading in key races in the local elections held on Sunday in Albania, but its victory is expected to be much less convincing than in 2013.

With most of the votes counted, left-wing candidates are expected to win key towns like Tirana, Durres, Korca, Elbasan and Vlora, while the opposition held Shkodra and successfully competed in smaller municipalities where it scored some surprising victories in places like Pogradec, Selenica and Permet.

Albania’s political leaders see the election result in opposite ways

In Albania, following a two day period without any declarations, the main political leaders, head of majority, Edi Rama and that of the opposition, Lulzim Basha publicly addressed the citizens on Tuesday evening.

The first one to address was Basha, who considered the elections as a step backwards for the country and added that the main feature of the process was the massive purchase of votes and the efforts of  SP and SMI to rig the polls.

Un tribunal de Túnez ha condenado en rebeldía este miércoles a 10 años de cárcel al expresidente Zine el Abidine ben Alí y a su yerno Mohamed Sajr el Materi por corrupción, según ha informado la agencia estatal tunecina de noticias, TAP.

 

El tribunal ha condenado a otros 10 años de cárcel al exministro de Propiedades Estatales, Ridha Grira, y tres ejecutivos de la empresa Princesse Holding, propiedad de El Materi.

Des sources privées évoquent l’intention du Président mauritanien Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz de procéder incessamment à un remaniement ministériel. Le retard accusé par la nomination d’un nouveau commissaire à la sécurité alimentaire créditerait selon les mêmes sources ces tractations officieuses, visant ce chambardement.

Des ministres qui pourraient être touchés par le nouveau remaniement ministériel seraient encore en déplacement à l’étranger dans le cadre de missions gouvernementales.

Low Turnout Marks Albania Local Elections

Election day was generally calm without major incidents but the turnout was much lower than in the 2013 general elections.

Preliminary data from the Central Election Commission shows about 45 per cent of voters cast their ballot. This is the lowest turnout in 25 years.

Although 3.37 million Albanians have the right to vote, an estimated one third of them have left the country, seeking a better life. In 2013, about 1.7 million Albanians voted in the general elections with the turnout reaching 53 per cent.

Somali Government Spokesman Ridwaj Haji Abdiweli has announced his resignation from the office he was holding for the past two years. Abdiweli who announced his decision through his official twitter account cited undisclosed personal issue as the main reason.

"I want to announce my resignation as the government spokesman and media adviser to the prime minister of Somalia, it was great honor for me for the past two years to serve my country which is experiencing great challenge," he said in a letter sent to newsrooms.

Argelia pondrá en marcha un plan destinado a recuperar el control de las mezquitas de la capital en manos de imanes salafistas, anuncio hoy el ministro argelino de Asuntos Religiosos, Mohamed Aisa.

En declaraciones divulgadas por el diario en lengua francesa "Liberté", Aisa explicó que "al menos 55 mezquitas son dirigidas por imanes voluntarios de obediencia salafista en Argel. Pronto se les pedirá que abandonen sus puestos".

Los imanes no son considerados radicales, pero "no pertenecen a nuestro referente religioso nacional", precisó.

Fur tribe elects new Sultan in Darfur

The Shura and Notables' councils of the Sudanese Fur tribe have chosen Ahmed Hussein Ayoub Ali Dinar as the Sultan for the whole tribe. 

The elected Sultan Ali Dinar has renewed his commitment to communicate with -besides the large Fur tribe- all the tribes in Darfur, to resolve all social issues. At the event on Sunday, he announced that he wants to work with various native administrations to achieve security and stability in all parts of Darfur.

Former Albanian PM demands international monitors to delegitimize elections

Former PM and former democrat leader, Sali Berisha has issued a surprising declaration in the early hours of Monday, calling upon the international community to delegitimize the June 21 local government elections in Albania.

This is the first time that Mr. Berisha makes such request in his 25 year political career. When the left wing has made such requests, Mr. Berisha has always condemned them.

Mr. Berisha’s declaration is based in 9 arguments, which according to him, support the request not legitimize the elections.

Left wing majority takes over the largest municipalities in Albania

The process of ballot counting in Albania is coming to an end and so far, the majority of 61 municipalities has been won by the left wing majority under the logo of the Alliance for European Albania coalition led by Edi Rama and speaker of Parliament, Ilir Meta.

This governing coalition has won the largest municipalities in the country.

The process has been officially concluded in less than half of municipalities. Out of 28 municipalities where the result has been announced, 20 of them have been won by the left wing and only eight of them by the opposition.
