Residents in Tripoli should stay away from areas where there are armed clashes, the government and army have said.  They have also called on community elders to intervene and help bring about a peaceful solution to the current crisis.

The Ministry of Interior asked residents to stay away from the clashes taking place around Tripoli International Airport and on the road between the airport and nearby Qasr Ben Ghashir.  Damage to such a vital facility, it said, sent a negative message to everyone outside of the country and impacted on Libyans inside and outside as well.  It called for an immediate end to all clashes; they were terrorising people and destroying daily life, it said.

The Ministry reported that it has issued instructions to the General Security Directorate and Tripoli’s Central Security Directorate to take measures to secure the streets of the city.

For its part, the Presidency of the General Staff likewise called for an immediate end to the clashes, saying it had commissioned units attached to the Military District of Tripoli to support and participate with Security Directorate forces in Tripoli to secure gas stations, government buildings and vital establishments in the city.
