Sharjah: Sharjah Consultative Council concluded its 8th legislative chapter on Thursday, marking the end of its four-year term.

The Council will see half of its 42 members elected in the upcoming term, His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah announced on Tuesday. The elections are expected to take place after the FNC elections in October this year.

A decree will be issued soon to address the date, candidate registration and length of campaigning time.

The last debate in this term of the Council was on the Roads and Transport Authority, traffic jams in Sharjah and on measures to ease traffic movement from Sharjah to Dubai and Ajman as well as to regulate the traffic movement within the emirate.

The draft on this topic included important recommendations on countdown timers and smart boards showing locations of traffic jams in addition to setting up footbridges across the city.

The session concluded with the Council approving the draft law and its recommendations.

Speaking to Gulf News, Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Jarwan, Secretary-General of the Consultative Council, said that over the past four years, the council had discussed topics related to key sectors and vital departments in the emirate.

The government approved nearly 95 per cent of their recommendations.

Al Jarwan said that over the past four years, the council held 62 sessions, discussed 23 law projects and addressed 108 complaints and recommendations.

Meanwhile, all members of the council hailed the new decision of Dr Shaikh Sultan to encourage the youth to take part in working for the welfare of citizens and in the development of the emirate.

Yousuf Khamis Al Mazroui, a member of the Council, told Gulf News: “This is a great decision by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan. This decision gives a chance to the young generation — who have good experience and skills — to join the Council and be part of the decision-making.”

Mohammad Ahmad Al Dhuhori, member of the council’s Health Committee called it a wise decision.

Yousuf Mohammad Bilhay, also a member of the Health Committee, told Gulf News that the decision will enable the council to benefit from the knowledge of youth and their ambition.

“The decision is very timely and it will give a chance for the members to practise democracy as is the case in the Federal National Council,” said Bilhay.
