More than 1,000 voters took part in overseas elections for the Federal National Council, which ended on Monday.

The National Election Commission said polling centres in Germany, the US and the UK had the greatest number of overseas voters, out of the 1,389 who took part. Germany had 280 voters, while the US had 255 and the UK had 95.

Ninety-four polling stations were set up at UAE embassies and diplomatic missions worldwide for the polls, which marked the first time eligible Emiratis could vote overseas.

Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State and Chairman of the NEC, praised the success of overseas voting.

He said: “Despite the fact that this was a first in overseas polling for the UAE, it was a big success and saw participation from members of electoral entities staying overseas, who travelled long distances to cast their votes in a nationalistic gesture.

“This ascertains the unity of the UAE community and its keenness to be part of the journey towards further achievements for the UAE on all levels.”

He thanked Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, for his ministry’s efforts and those of the diplomatic missions overseas.
