Naser Al Remeithi.-

ABU DHABI // The 20 candidates who won election to the Federal National Council have been cleared to take their seats on the new consultative body.

And Yemeni pupils are also winners, after the National Elections Commission decided to donate the many computers, touchscreens, laptops and printers used in the ballot to schools in the country.

The NEC said its appeals committee had found no objections to any of the winners.

The 19 men and one woman were elected from 329 candidates.

The committee said it had received one objection from a failed candidate in Dubai who claimed his tally of his votes did not match official figures, but after examination the appeal was rejected.

Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for FNC Affairs and Chairman of the NEC, said that the committee hoped that the new FNC members would act as an effective voice for society to the Government.

In the coming weeks, another 20 members will be appointed to the council by the Rulers of each emirate.

The President, Sheikh Khalifa, will then issue a decree for the council to be established and another for it to convene.
