Following the hype of the NA-122 by-elections, the morale of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf supporters and candidates in Union Council 118 is at an all-time high.
Residents of the area say that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has neglected the area for too long. “The government has failed to deliver and the people are tired of their empty promises,” says one of the residents.
They say chief among the problems in the area is the access to safe drinking water. They say some of the pipelines that bring water to their colonies were laid before Partition. The tap water carries rust particles, they say.
Other major problems in the area include: sewerage, absence of street-lights, and cleanliness.
PTI’s candidate for chairman Gul Muhammad Khan is a businessman and is contesting elections for the first time. The PTI candidate for vice chairperson Moazzam Qadri, also a businessman, is contesting elections for the first time as well.
They say the cargo station in the UC has caused a lot of nuisance for residents. They say it has caused pollution in the area and is the hotbed for various diseases including dengue fever. They say heavy trawlers and trucks sometimes snap electric-wires and pipes.
The PML-N candidate for chairman Fayyaz Virk is a motor-mechanic. He was elected general councillor in 1985 and 2001 and nazim in 2005. The PML-N candidate for vice-chairman Riaz Ahmad Kamboh deals in cloth and is contesting elections for the first time. They said that they would ensure the provision of safe drinking water, an adequate sewerage system, streetlights and cleanliness after being elected.
There are 9,800 votes registered in the locality, 55 per cent men and 45 per cent women.
Areas included in the UC are Signal Shop, Barrot Colony, Railway Stadium Colony, Garhi Shahu, Washing Line, Vains Road, DS Office, Pringle Road and Victoria Road.
