Egypt postpones verdict on election laws constitutionality

Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court adjourned on Tuesday the trial determining the constitutionality of the parliamentary elections laws to 1 March, as a verdict is expected to be returned next session.

The elections are expected to take place in March and April.

The court's board of commissioners had filed a report to a 12-judge panel in the court, saying there were "unconstitutional" articles in laws regulating parliamentary elections.

Sufi orders to field followers in Egypt's parliamentary elections

The association of the Sufi Orders of Alexandria has announced that it will officially field nine of its followers, including one woman, to run for individual seats in different constituencies in March's parliamentary elections, the Ahram Arabic website has reported.

 

“We encourage and support the members of the Sufi orders to run for the individual seats in the parliamentary elections for the first time in the history of the Sufi Orders of Alexandria” Sheikh Gaber Kassam, the secretary-general of the Sufi Orders of Alexandria, said in the statement.

Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) is expected to look into the constitutionality of three laws regulating the country's parliamentary elections on Wednesday, in a ruling that could delay voting set to start on 21 March.

March's parliamentary elections are the third and final step in a political roadmap set forth by the Egyptian army following the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, after a vote to ratify the constitution in January 2014 and presidential elections in June 2014.

Alaa Abdel Fattah sentenced to five years of maximum security prison

Renowned activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, who faces trial alongside 24 others, was sentenced to five years of maximum security prison by a Cairo court on Monday, in his retrial for charges of illegal assembly.

Osama al-Mahdy, Abdel Fattah's lawyer said today's verdict is considered a preliminary one, since the initial verdict was handed in absentia. 

"We will appeal at the Court of Cassation," he said, adding that this court will decide whether to uphold the verdict or order a retrial.  

Another defendant, Ahmed Abdel Rahman was handed the same prison term of five years.

Ahmed Ezz disqualified from running in parliamentary elections

The parliamentary elections committee in Menoufiya governorate has disqualified former leading National Democratic Party (NDP) member and steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz from running in the upcoming parliamentary poll, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported on Sunday. 

The committee announced on Sunday the final list of candidates registered for the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held in March.

The list did not include the name of Ezz who seeked to run in Menoufiya’s El-Sadat district. 

Commissioners say articles regulating parliament elections 'unconstitutional'

The Supreme Constitutional Court’s Board of Commissioners determined on Saturday that several articles in the laws regulating parliamentary elections are unconstitutional, Ahram Arabic news website reported. 

The Board submitted its report the to 12-judge panel to rule.

The advisory board issued its recommendations report after reviewing six lawsuits brought against the House of Representative Law, Political Rights Law and Parliamentary Constituencies Law.

The Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) will convene on Sunday to discuss the constitutionality of those laws.

Egypt's party candidates struggle to meet ‎parliamentary registration deadline

Leading officials of Egypt's political parties have said they are ‎doing their best to finalise the registration papers of ‎their candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections. ‎‎On Sunday, the Higher Elections Committee (HEC) ‎extended the window for parliamentary candidate ‎registration by two days — from 2pm Tuesday, 17 ‎February, to 7pm Thursday, 19 February.‎

Some had high hopes that the registration window ‎would remain open beyond Thursday so that party-‎based candidates could have more time to submit their ‎registration papers.‎

Campaign launched to increase Egyptian women's political know-how

The National Council for Women (NCW) has launched a new campaign called “Egyptian woman: a step towards parliament…choose right” with the aim of raising Egyptian female voters’ awareness on the importance of their participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections and putting them on the right track in the voting process. 
 
The campaign kicked off on 1 February, touring all governorates and specifically targeting 100 women and girls in each electoral district. 
 

'Parliamentary elections will go ahead despite terrorist attacks': Sisi

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and leaders of Egypt's mainstream political parties stressed in a meeting on Sunday that the country's long-delayed parliamentary polls must go ahead as scheduled next March.

The meeting came a few days after at least 30 people were killed in coordinated militant attacks on Thursday in the restive North Sinai governorate, including army personnel and civilians.

Sabahi rejects boycott of Egypt's parliamentary elections

Former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi has said that boycotting parliamentary elections will not help the political situation, Aswat Masriya reported on Friday.

Leftist politician Sabahi, who is the founder of the Egyptian Popular Current, said "boycotting the parliamentary elections shows weakness and does not help the current political situation."

Parliamentary polls are set to start mid-July as per the Egyptian constitution, passed on 18 January.

Egypt’s Islamists will face a tough test at parliamentary elections expected later this year amid growing public anger toward the Islamist trend and increasing inter-Islamist divisions following the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Mursi last July and the blacklisting of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Islamists can expect to win no more than one-third of seats at the next parliamentary elections, according to political experts, in contrast to the 70-percent majority secured by Islamist parties at the last elections.

A grouping of left-leaning Egyptian parties has reiterated calls for the amendment of the controversial protest law and the parliamentary elections law, both of which have recently stirred much criticism.

In a meeting on Wednesday, representatives of various parties also condemned security brutality against peaceful youth protesters and called for the release of all those detained for breaching the protest law.

Egypt to start preparation for parliamentary elections by 18 July

Egyptian state-owned TV said Sunday that post-coup president Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has decided to start preparation for parliamentary elections by July 18.

According to MENA news agency, quoted presidential spokesman Ehab Badawy as saying that al-Sisi told US Secretary of State during his recent visit that Egypt is "determined to move forward with the future roadmap."

The date of the parliamentary elections has not yet been specified.
