No hay nada como las urnas. Lo demuestran las dos mayores elecciones democráticas de la historia celebradas en India, entre el 20 de abril y el 10 de mayo, y en la Unión Europea, entre el 22 y el 25 de mayo, utilizadas por cientos de millones de ciudadanos para cambiar el paisaje político e incluso determinar la orientación de sus gobiernos.

Protests have been taking place in cities across Egypt, days after the country elected former army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi its president in a vote his sole contender has appealed.

On Friday, demonstrators took to the streets in the capital Cairo, Bani Suef and Fayoum, holding banners with photos of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi and chanting against the president-elect.

Preliminary results from the three-day election that ended on Wednesday gave 96 percent of votes to Sisi and 3 percent to leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.

Egypt’s former military chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, vowed on Thursday that the country would not go backwards but move forward after the initial results of the presidential election see him winning by a landslide.

“We know that some people fear a return to the past, but this will not happen, there is no going back and we will move forward,” Sisi said responding to a question about the fears of a return to the situation before the Jan. 25 revolution, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper Aljarida.

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who won a landslide victory this week in the Egyptian presidential election, is likely to face severe threats from militant groups during his upcoming rule.

On Thursday, Egyptian jihadist group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis issued a threat to Sisi, Al Arabiya News Channel’s Arabic website reported.

“Will Sisi last till he takes over power? And if he does, will he remain?” the group asked in a tweet following the announcement of the initial results of the presidential elections.

HRW says Egyptian elections come amidst political repression

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Wednesday that an "intense crackdown" on the opposition in Egypt is creating a "repressive environment that severely undermines the fairness of the elections."

In a news brief, HRW's Middle East and North Africa Director Sarah Leah Whitson said: "The mass arrests of thousands of political dissidents, whether Islamist or secular, has all but shut down the political arena and stripped these elections of real meaning."

Whitson added: "The presidential election cannot mask the ongoing brutal crackdown on peaceful opposition."

Former Egyptian military chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is poised to win the country's presidential election in a landslide -- though the fairness of the vote has been questioned.

Exit polls suggest el-Sisi won 95.3% of the vote, while opponent Hamdeen Sabahy garnered only 4.7%, according to data from the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research and the Egyptian TV channel MBC Masr.

Low voter turnout has been reported on the second and final day of Egyptian presidential elections, as former army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to emerge as the country's next president.

While the Egyptian government declared a national holiday for Tuesday in an effort to get voters to cast their ballots, an official with international monitoring group Global Network for Rights and Development reported that voter turnout was noticibly low.

Egyptian liberal politician and President of Ghad al-Thawra Party Ayman Nour dismissed the current presidential elections as "one-sided."

Nour, who ran against Mubarak in the 2005 Presidential elections, told Reuters on the sidelines of Aljazeera Forum Monday that the presidential elections are being held in a climate of "monopoly of power" and lack any genuine completion.

Even under Mubarak, he said, "there was no such clear monopoly of the presidential race as what is happening now."

15:10 A cabinet spokesman said the government cannot interfere in the work of the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) in response to widespread media calls to allow voters to cast their ballots without residence restrictions.

 

"PEC is the sole body responsible for making any election-related decisions. It has its own regulations and rules, and we cannot interfere."
