Parties call for inclusion in amending laws to govern parliamentary elections

Political parties criticised the president’s approach in the issuance of laws expected to regulate the coming parliamentary elections.

The Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP) and the Free Egyptians Party (FEP) called on the committee tasked with amending the Political Participation Law to be more inclusive in its activities.

Interim President Adly Mansour issued a presidential decree on 14 April creating the said committee to amend the laws in preparation for the coming parliamentary elections.

Founder of the Liberal Ghad Al-Thawra party Ayman Nour launched the "Boycotters" campaign Sunday, calling for boycotting the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for May 26-27 in Egypt.

In a phone call with Al-Sharq television anchor Mohamed Al-Qudousi, Nour said that youth will not take part in this "farcical" elections. He pointed out that Al-Sisi's presidential campaign is "weak" and that his personality is "weaker".

He called on all Egyptians to boycott the vote.

Egypt's presidential election commission on Sunday cleared resigned defense minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and former presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi - the only two candidates - to contest the May presidential elections.

"The two have met the candidacy conditions and the commission will not disqualify any of them," commission secretary-general Abdel-Aziz Salman told a press conference in Cairo.

Hamdeen Sabahi and Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi are Egypt's final contenders for the 2014 presidential race, the Presidential Election Commission's (PEC) spokesman Abdel-Aziz Salman said in a press conference on Sunday.

PEC – the judicial body supervising the polls – has examined the documents of both contenders and concluded that both candidates meet the eligibility requirements set by the commission, Salman said.

Egypt's elections will be held on 26 and 27 May.

The Egyptian military Thursday said it had gained “complete control over the situation” in the Sinai Peninsula, where Islamist insurgents have been carrying out attacks against security forces for several months.

Violence has spiraled in the Sinai since last July when the army toppled President Mohammad Morsi, prompting militants who had previously focused on attacks against neighboring Israel to turn their attention to Egyptian police and military targets.

Egipto mostró hoy su apoyo al acuerdo de reconciliación palestina al que han llegado el movimiento islamista Hamás, que gobierna la franja de Gaza, y el partido nacionalista Al Fatah, informó el Ministerio egipcio de Asuntos Exteriores.

En un comunicado, el ministro egipcio de Exteriores, Nabil Fahmi, dio la bienvenida al nuevo pacto logrado anoche, que incluye la convocatoria de elecciones en enero y la formación de un gobierno de unidad antes de julio.

The African Union's Peace and Security Council rejected the union's participation in monitoring the upcoming presidential elections in Egypt.

The PSC recommended Monday that the AU does not dispatch observers to the presidential elections scheduled for May 26-27 in Egypt, Anadolu news agency reported.

The PSC explained that the nomination of former Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi violates the charter of the AU, because "he led a coup against a legitimate government and ousted an elected president."

A number of Egyptian activists and movements announced they would hold a referendum on the army-backed roadmap and parallel elections coinciding with the upcoming presidential elections slated for May 26-27.

A former member of Tamarod movement Ghada Mohamed Naguib said that a number of "revolutionary forces" will hold a referendum on the so-called June 30 roadmap announced by Al-Sisi last July 3. She pointed out that "revolutionary movements" do not recognize the upcoming presidential elections, including April 6 Youth Movement, Revolutionary Socialists and others.

Sabahi gathers required recommendation forms to run for Egypt's presidency

The campaign of presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi said on Thursday that it had gathered the required number of recommendation forms for him to run for Egypt's presidency, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

Hossam Moenes, coordinator of Sabahi's electoral campaign, said the team had managed to gather the 25,000 notarised recommendation forms, with at least 1,000 from 15 governorates, as per the country's election law. He did not specify, however, the exact number of forms the campaign had gathered.

Iraq doubles elections monitors in anticipation of high voter turnout

Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Thursday (April 17th) said it has doubled the number of international observers who will monitor the next parliamentary elections.

"The decision to increase the number of international observers from the EU, UN, and various Asian and western countries to 1,454 observers comes from a desire to give the new democratic process in Iraq more transparency and to monitor any breaches of the country's election laws in light of the expected high turnout by Iraqi voters," said IHEC board chairman Sarbast Mustafa.

Sinai has lately seen a significant decline in the role and influence of tribal elders. They once enjoyed respect and appreciation, and their words for the tribe were final. Now, however, they are accused of being "informants" for successive governments in Cairo.

Most recently, tribal elders have been the target of a massive campaign criticizing them for quickly switching political affiliations and supporting whoever is currently at the Egyptian helm.

El Tribunal de Asuntos Urgentes de Alejandría prohibió hoy a "cualquier miembro de los Hermanos Musulmanes" concurrir a las próximas elecciones presidenciales y parlamentarias de Egipto, informó la agencia estatal Mena.

La decisión se tomó, según la fuente, "para evitar que miembros de grupos yihadistas y organizaciones extremistas puedan ejercer la política", en referencia a la Hermandad, declarada organización terrorista por el Gobierno interino de Egipto a finales del pasado diciembre.

La Liga Árabe firmó hoy un acuerdo con la Comisión Electoral egipcia para desplegar una misión de observadores del organismo panárabe en las próximas elecciones presidenciales en Egipto, cuya primera vuelta está prevista para los días 26 y 27 de mayo.

De acuerdo con este protocolo de cooperación, la Liga Árabe, cuya sede está en El Cairo, contará con alrededor de 120 observadores en Egipto bajo la dirección de la secretaria adjunta de la organización, la diplomática jordana Haifa abu Gazala.

An Egyptian court has banned current and former members of the Muslim Brotherhood from taking part in upcoming presidential and legislative elections, amid new attacks targeting the country's security forces.

The court, in the coastal northern city of Alexandria, ordered military-installed authorities on Tuesday to reject the candidacies from members of the group, which has swept all elections since the 2011 revolution.
