The head of Egypt’s ultra-Conservative Salafist Nour Party said on Monday that his party had launched its "Egypt is stronger than terrorism" campaign in support of the Egyptian state.

 

"We have launched our campaign, through our legitimate political party, as a responsibility towards our country," said Nour Party secretary-general Galal Morra.

El sindicato de periodistas egipcio denunció hoy que el proyecto de la nueva ley antiterrorista redactada por el Gobierno impone nuevas restricciones a la libertad de prensa y lo calificó de "peligroso". 

En un comunicado emitido hoy, el órgano que representa a todos los medios de comunicación advirtió de que la nueva ley volvería a introducir en el sistema legal egipcio penas de cárcel para los delitos informativos, lo cual había sido recientemente abolido. 

Egypt's Judicial Council approves draft anti-terror law

Egypt's highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, on Sunday approved a draft anti-terror law that will impose harsher punishments on those convicted of terrorism charges.

The cabinet last week approved the draft legislation which it said would provide "swift and just deterrence" against terrorism and dry up the sources of terrorism funding.

El Gobierno egipcio ha aprobado este miércoles la ley antiterrorista y la ley para regular las próximas elecciones parlamentarias, según han informado los medios de comunicación oficiales.

   El ministro de Justicia, Ibrahim El Heneidy, ha explicado que, en lo relativo a la ley electoral, el Gobierno ha seguido el mandato del Tribunal Constitucional, que había pedido que la norma jurídica se aprobara con el tiempo suficiente para valorarla.

Informed sources have said that the Egyptian cabinet's weekly meeting, expected on Wednesday, will give priority to discussing laws on terrorism and parliamentary elections.

 

Minister of Transitional Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ibrahim El-Heneidy told reporters this week that the justice ministry has recently finalised a new law on fighting terrorism.

"It is separate from a recent law on 'terrorist entities', but both complement each other," he said.

El fiscal general de Egipto, Hisham Barakat, falleció ayer como consecuencia de las heridas sufridas en un atentado con coche bomba ocurrido por la mañana en El Cairo. Según la agencia oficial de noticias egipcia MENA, al menos una decena de personas resultaron heridas en el ataque, la mayoría miembros de su convoy. El atentado tuvo lugar en el barrio de Heliópolis, cerca de una academia militar, mientras Barakat se dirigía a su lugar de trabajo.

Egypt's Foreign Ministry rejected on Friday a United States report critical of the state's human rights practices in 2014, saying it relied on sources which lack "accuracy and credibility."

The ministry said in a statement that though the report included some positive references, it was mired with "fallacies and exaggerations" regarding the status of human rights in Egypt.

Egypt to issue new laws on terrorism, parliamentary immunity

Egypt's Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Transitional Justice Ibrahim Al-Heneidy disclosed Sunday that the justice ministry has finalised drafting a new law aimed at cracking down on terrorist crimes. 

 

"The new 52-article anti-terrorism law is primarily aimed at stemming the tide of funding terrorist activities and organisations and giving new definitions for terrorist crimes," said Heneidy in a press conference.

Amendments to three laws aimed at paving the way for Egypt's long-delayed parliamentary elections are expected to be discussed by the cabinet in a plenary meeting this week. 

The three laws regulate the division of electoral constituencies, the workings of the House of Representatives, and the exercise of political rights.

Shafiq party rejects his resignation

The Egyptian Patriotic Movement has rejected the resignation of its leader Ahmed Shafiq, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

 

The movement’s supreme council said it would form a committee to travel to Abu Dhabi, where the Mubarak-era prime minister has lived  for “security reasons”  since he lost the presidency to Mohamed Morsi in 2012, to convince him to remain with the party.

The council said in a statement that they see Shafiq as a "principle," not a person, and that he is a true symbol of the party and will remain its head “forever.”

Egypt govt committee issues constituencies decision

A government committee has agreed to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies to 205 from 206, in line with the view of the State Council, Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy has said.

 

The decision was agreed by the committee and the legislation department at the State Council.

El-Heneidy, who heads the committee responsible for amending the election laws, said he would notify the cabinet about the legislation department's approval of the amendments.

La Corte de El Cairo, Egipto, ha sentenciado al expresidente de ese país, Mohamed Morsi, a cadena perpetua por espionaje, informa RIA.

El expresidente de Egipto Mohamed Morsi, derrocado el julio de 2013, actualmente cumple una condena de 20 años de prisión por incitación a la violencia contra manifestantes. Anteriormente, en mayo fue condenado a muerte por espionaje y fugarse de prisión durante el levantamiento de 2011.

 

Journalists' Syndicate rejects 'attacks on freedoms' by Egypt's authorities

Egypt's Journalists' Syndicate board said on Monday it rejects what it described as "a continuous attack on the freedom of the press" by the government.

 

The board also added that such attacks were apparent in recent complaints by the Ministry of Interior against journalists who published articles that were critical of the government.

El ex primer ministro y excandidato presidencial egipcio Ahmed Shafiq ha presentado su dimisión como líder del Movimiento Nacional Egipcio “por las difíciles circunstancias” en las que practica su función, informaron hoy los medios egipcios.

Shafiq, que fundó a finales de 2012 esa formación política y fue el último primer ministro del derrocado dictador Hosni Mubarak, envió anoche un mensaje con su renuncia al primer vicepresidente del partido, Yehia Qadri.

Egypt's Press Syndicate is to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the ongoing crackdown on journalists and press freedom, the head of the syndicate’s freedoms committee, Khaled El-Balshy, told Ahram Online.

 

“The interior ministry and many other governmental apparatuses have been filing frequent legal complaints against journalists, and these are all proof that the current government is targeting journalists,” El-Balshy said.
