Bahrain’s main opposition has announced its decision to boycott the parliamentary and municipal council elections expected to be held in October this year.

This was announced at a Press conference held at Al Wefaq National Islamic Society headquarter. The opposition is represented by four societies; Al Wefaq, National Democratic Action Society (Waad), National Democratic Assembly, Progressive Democratic Tribune and Al Ekha National Society.

HRW slams Bahraini justice system as 'criminal'

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has blasted the Persian Gulf country of Bahrain for its severe punishment of peaceful protesters while granting immunity to abusive authorities.

In its latest report on Bahrain, the HRW on Wednesday lashed out at the Manama regime’s justice system, describing it as “criminal” and censuring its “failure to deliver basic accountability and impartial justice.”

A recent ruling by a Bahraini court sentencing four people to life in prison is part of the regime’s political game against the opposition, a political analyst says.

In an interview with Press TV on Tuesday, Jawad Fairooz, a former member of the Bahraini parliament, said the ruling is biased as such verdicts in the Persian Gulf monarchy are issued by the direct order of the Manama regime.

A political analyst says the ruthless crackdown on Bahraini protesters by the ruling Al Khalifa regime is carried out under the false accusation of involvement in terrorism.  

“These kinds of actions just give the [Bahraini] regime an excuse to crack down, but we know well that there have been a lot of non-violent Bahrainis who have been falsely accused of terrorism,” Stephen Zunes told Press TV on Monday.

Prominent Bahraini human rights activist Nabeel Rajab has called for serious dialog between Al Khalifa regime and opposition leaders.

“The only solution is a serious dialogue between the royal family and the opposition [al-Wefaq movement],” said Rajab, who heads the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.

Rajab who was released on Saturday after serving a two-year jail term, said Bahrain’s situation today is worse compared to when he went to prison because of an upsurge in violence.

Amnesty International (AI) has voiced concerns over the lack of reform of the judiciary in Bahrain, amid the ongoing Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown on dissent.

In a statement issued on Monday, the rights group also criticized the country for “slow and inadequate investigations” into past human rights abuses and “continuing restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly.”

A political analyst says Bahrain’s opposition groups should form a government in exile in order to better conduct their campaign against the Al Khalifa regime, Press TV reports.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Saturday, Syed Ali Wasif, a member of the Washington-based Society for International Reforms and Research, stated that Bahraini opposition parties are in need of guidance and should seek some international political and legal support.

Bahrain arrested 170 protesters in April: Al-Wefaq

Bahrain’s main opposition bloc Al-Wefaq says some 170 protesters, including 29 children, were arrested by regime forces in April.

The group said in a report posted on its website on Saturday that 89 of the arrests took place during home raids, 42 on the streets and 15 others at checkpoints.

Six other protesters were arrested through summons while the cases of the remaining 18 were unknown, according to Al-Wefaq’s Liberties and Human Rights Department (LHRD).

Bahraini court issues long jail terms to 12 protesters

A Bahraini court has sentenced 12 anti-regime protesters to long prison terms of up to 15 years amid the persisting harsh crackdown on the country’s popular uprising.

The 12 young men were reportedly charged on Wednesday with “attacking” the regime’s Saudi-backed security forces during anti-government protest rallies in the Senabes and Alii villages of the Persian Gulf state.

Bahrain’s main opposition bloc Al-Wefaq has criticized the holding of a conference on civilizations and cultures by Bahraini authorities in the country.

“A conference on civilizations and cultures cannot go with destroying mosques,” Sheikh Ali Salman, the head of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, said in reference to measures by the Bahraini regime in destroying sites belonging to the Shias.

According to reports on Tuesday, the Bahraini court sentenced others to 15 years in prison with a fine of 1000 Bahraini dinars.

On Monday, the court convicted the men of taking part in an unauthorized demonstration in a village, south of the capital Manama last year. The prosecution also convicted the Bahrainis of assaulting police during the rally.

Bahraini protesters have held anti-regime demonstrations across the country, despite an ongoing crackdown by Saudi-backed forces.

People in Daih, Sanabis, and Sitra took to streets in support of opposition leaders on Wednesday.

“We will never give up our rights, no to humiliation,” chanted the protesters.

On Sunday, a Bahraini court handed down jail terms to seven anti-regime activists after convicting them of an attack that wounded a policeman during a protest in December 2012.

Security forces in Bahrain have attacked anti-regime protesters near the capital, Manama, as the ruling Al Khalifa regime continues its heavy-handed crackdown on dissidents.

Locals said they witnessed extensive use of tear gas and poisonous fumes when Bahraini forces sought to disperse protesters during an anti-regime demonstration in the northeastern island of Sitra on Tuesday.

The development comes days after several people were injured when Bahraini forces attacked anti-regime protesters in several villages of the country.
