Jakarta. Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama will step in as acting governor of the capital city on May 18 as Governor Joko Widodo begins a long leave of absence to focus on his presidential campaign.

Basuki said he would have no problem on taking the role.

“There’s nothing special about being left on my own to do the job. I will work as usual, I’ll call Jokowi,” he said. “The difference is now I can’t meet him every morning here at [the City Hall].”

Basuki says he has important decisions ahead of him when he steps in as the acting governor.

Amid rifts, Hanura to decide on coalition partner this afternoon

Dozens of executives and provincial leaders of the Hanura Party are scheduled to attend the party’s national executive meeting in Jakarta, Tuesday afternoon, to choose the party’s coalition partners ahead of the July 9 presidential election, a party executive has said.

“Today’s national meeting will have only one agenda: to make a formal decision regarding Hanura’s coalition partners, nothing more,” party executive Sarifuddin Sudding told The Jakarta Post.

Jakarta. Activists who fought for reformation in 1998 strongly rejected presidential candidates that have bad human rights records or those who supported former president Suharto’s regime, which was tainted with human rights violations.

Poengky Indarti, executive director of the Indonesian Human Rights Monitor (Imparsial), said some of the candidates that are running in the presidential race have negative track records, especially related to human rights.

Golkar Party presidential hopeful Aburizal Bakrie discussed a possible coalition between Golkar and the Gerindra Party to win July’s presidential election in a meeting with the latter’s presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto, on Monday.

“It’s a return visit as Pak Prabowo had visited [Aburizal’s home] last Tuesday,” Golkar's central executive board deputy secretary general, Lalu Mara, said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Monday's meeting took place at Prabowo’s home in Bojong Koneng village, Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, at 11 a.m. local time.

Election-related crimes could delay national tallying

The Elections Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu) said that stalled vote counting in some provinces was mostly due to alleged vote-rigging, not administrative errors.

Bawaslu chairman Muhammad said over the weekend that the agency had issued a recommendation to the National Police to launch an investigation into individuals allegedly responsible for election-related crimes that had caused vote-counting delays.

The murmurs gained momentum after Aburizal held a meeting with the Gerindra Party’s presidential nominee at the former’s house, which resulted in a commitment of political cooperation between Golkar and Gerindra ahead the July 9 presidential election.

TNI chief conducts ‘blusukan’ ahead of presidential race

Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko conducted an impromptu visit on Friday, now popularly known as blusukan, to several military commands in Greater Jakarta to check on the army’s preparedness in securing the upcoming presidential election.

Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Friday that he hoped President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s successor would continue to bolster the Indonesian Military’s (TNI) weapon systems in accordance with the Minimum Essential Force (MEF) framework.

An alliance between the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) will be announced soon, a senior PDI-P politician said on Thursday.

“We are just waiting to make it official,” PDI-P deputy secretary-general Hasto Kristianto told The Jakarta Post, adding that there would be a meeting between PDI-P leader Megawati Soekarnoputri and PKB leader Muhaimin Iskandar.

The workers, representing the Women’s Action Committee (KAP), said they had seen no significant progress for female workers during Joko’s time in office.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic party would benefit over the longer term from rebuilding its reputation in opposition, rather than pushing to become part of an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) coalition, a political analyst said on Tuesday.

A researcher from the Anticorruption Study Center (Pukat) at Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University, Hifdzil Alim, says Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Abraham Samad should reject an offer to run for vice president as such an offer was just political maneuvering on the part of the party concerned.

He said the party made the offer in an attempt to come across as a clean party that was against corruption.

“Pukat hopes that Abraham Samad will not be lulled by the party’s sweet talk,” said Hifdzil on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stated on Wednesday that he hoped whoever would eventually continue his job as the next leader of the country could perform better.

“So let’s us pave the way for the next president by making the path smoother,” he said on the opening of the 2014 National Development Planning Conference in Jakarta as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.

 

He said the country’s development plan for the next five to 10 years had been deliberated and thus it would be the next president’s job to implement it.

Political parties are expected to file electoral disputes with the Constitutional Court when the General Elections Commission (KPU) finishes its official vote count by May 9.
