A farmers’ union has announced its support for Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s presidential bid.

 

"We will organize teams at all levels to assist Jokowi in attaining his goal,” Mugi Ramanu, chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Union (SPI), said in Mampang on Thursday. 

 

On Thursday, Jokowi visited the SPI office to discuss various agricultural issues that farmers faced.

 

Prabowo holds meeting with Aburizal on possible coalition

Gerindra Party presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto met with Golkar Party's Aburizal Bakrie at the latter's residence in Central Jakarta on Monday to discuss a potential coalition ahead the July 9 presidential election.

Prabowo arrived around 12.30 p.m. Golkar politicians downplayed the meeting as merely "Aburizal hosting Prabowo for lunch."

Prabowo is a former Golkar member. After losing the party's presidential convention in 2004, he left the party and founded Gerindra.

Jakarta. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic party would benefit over the longer term from rebuilding its reputation in opposition, rather than pushing to become part of an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) coalition, a political analyst said on Tuesday.

“It’s better for the Democrats to be in opposition along with the Prosperous Justice Party [PKS],” AS Hakim said. “The party has been in power for 10 years and, if they take being in opposition seriously over the next five years, they could repair their image.”

Jakarta. The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has decided to form a team to seek a possible coalition with several parties, including the Great Indonesia Movement party, or Gerindra, with officials saying they have decided not to be an opposition party in the House of Representatives.

PKS chairman Anis Matta on Sunday said his party is seriously looking into three possible coalitions and has formed teams to review the possibilities.

President holds plenary meeting on accomplishment of govt tasks

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a plenary meeting here on Tuesday with his ministers to discuss accomplishment of his government tasks.

"Let us take fast steps to accomplish (the governments tasks). I appeal to the chief ministers to point out the homework that has to be finished," the President stated during the opening of the plenary meeting.

KPU delays release of final overseas tally

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has delayed the announcement of the final tally of votes from 130 Overseas Election Committees (PPLNs) as D1 forms have yet to arrive in Indonesia, a commissioner has said.

“As many as 130 PPLNs have completed the recapitulation of votes; however, original D1 forms from 10 PPLNs have not yet arrived,” KPU commissioner Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah said on the sidelines of an open vote recapitulation plenary meeting in Jakarta on Sunday, as quoted by Antara.

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo says it is unlikely that the party will form a coalition with the Democratic Party ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

He said PDI-P had decided Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would be its presidential candidate while the Democratic Party had 11 presidential convention participants, one of which would be nominated as its presidential candidate.

Supporters of Rhoma Irama have said that the self-styled king of dangdut would be better off leaving the National Awakening Party (PKB) after a lack of certainty regarding his potential presidential candidacy from the Islamic-based party. 

Rhoma’s official group of supporters, known as Rhoma Irama for Presiden RI (Riforri), said on Saturday that the singer had decided to withdraw his support from the PKB if the party did not nominate him as a presidential candidate.

A political consultant has warned that the Gerindra Party’s presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto will suffer the most if a group of political parties that managed to gain less than 10 percent of the vote form another coalition.

Yunarto Wijaya of Charta Politika said currently there were three larger parties that were likely to form coalitions with middle-sized parties. They are the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Gerindra and the Golkar Party, the top-three parties according to quick-count surveys.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in his capacity as the chairman of the Democratic Party, is slated to meet with the party’s 33 provincial branch leaders at his residence in Cikeas, West Java, on Saturday afternoon to discuss the party’s next moves ahead of the July 9 presidential election.

The meeting is aimed at seeking input from regional party branches in relation to the idea of having the ruling party form its own coalition and nominate its own presidential candidate, party member Roy Suryo Notodiprojo told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

KPU may delay announcement of election results

The General Elections Commission (KPU) said on Friday it might fail to meet its own deadline of May 9 for announcing the official results of the legislative poll. 

KPU commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay said a delay was possible as the commission would still have to conduct revotes in all polling stations in South Nias in North Sumatra. 

He said the revotes and recapitulations might hamper the national recapitulation process, scheduled to be held from April 26 to May 6.

Jakarta. The 12 political parties that competed in the April 9 legislative election had campaign funds totaling Rp 3.1 trillion ($272 million), according to the nation’s election committee.

The Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) topped the list with the most funds, at Rp 434.9 billion, while the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) had the least, at Rp 52.9 billion, according to the General Elections Committee (KPU).

The KPU set the deadline at 6 p.m. on April 24 for parties to submit their reports on final campaign funding for the legislative election.

The Gerindra Party has emerged as the biggest spender in the 2014 legislative election.

In its final campaign financial report, the party claims to have spent Rp 435 billion (US$37.5 million) on its campaign, eightfold more than the Rp 53 billion the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) spent on its campaign.

The PKPI spent less than any other party on its campaign. 

Behind Gerindra is the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which spent Rp 404 billion, followed closely by the Golkar Party with Rp 402 billion.

Suryadharma on the losing side in PPP conflict

A public opinion poll conducted by the Jakarta-based Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) found that a majority of respondents would like to hear more about the 2014 presidential candidates’ programs before they cast their votes in the presidential election on July 9.

The LSI survey, released on Tuesday and conducted between 15 and 18 April in 33 provinces, found 65.7 percent of 1200 respondents said they wanted to hear presidential candidates talk about their future policies if elected, while only 17.25 percent wanted to know about the possible future coalition.

The revote affecting voters in 29 provinces could potentially bring problems to the final tally for the 2014 legislative election at the national level, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has said.

KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said on Tuesday that many polling stations in a number of provinces were yet to hold revotes although the deadline was April 23.

Rizal Djalil, a former National Mandate Party (PAN) lawmaker, was elected new Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chairman on Tuesday, replacing Hadi Poernomo who was named a graft suspect in a high profile tax fraud case.

“Rizal Djalil was elected democratically. The deputy chairman position is still held by Hasan Bisri. No vote counting was conducted because all meeting participants agreed on his election unanimously,” BPK secretary-general Hendar Ristriawan said after a four-hour session, as quoted by Antara news agency.
