EU raises concern over Aceh violence ahead of election

European Union ambassadors in Indonesia expressed their concern over recent violent incidents in Aceh, which included the killing of three people on Monday, a press statement from the EU's representative office in Indonesia said on Friday.

The EU is calling on the political parties and local authorities in Aceh to ensure that election campaigning is conducted in a peaceful and non-violent manner.

The recent nomination of Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as a presidential candidate has resulted in a fall in the number of undecided voters, a survey has revealed.

“Since Jokowi entered the presidential race, the number of undecided voters has kept on falling,” Djayadi Hanan, research director at Saiful Mujani Research & Consulting (SMRC), said as quoted by kompas.comon Thursday, based on the results of an SMRC survey.

TNI looks to rotation ahead of elections

With the general election nearing, the Indonesian Military (TNI) has decided to rotate its high-ranking officers, including the installation of Maj. Gen. Mulyono as Jakarta Military Commander, replacing Maj. Gen. Hudawi Lubis.

TNI spokesman Col. Bernadus Robert revealed the TNI had rotated 60 high-ranking officers, including Mulyono, former operation assistant to the Army chief of staff, and Hudawi, who would be posted in the role of Army expert staff coordinator.

Jakarta. The government, through the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry, on Tuesday announced that the 2014 legislative election set for next Wednesday would be a public holiday for employees.

“We have reached the decision so that employees across the country can concentrate on the elections without being burdened by work,” said Manpower and Transmigration Ministry secretary general Abdul Wahab Bangkona.

JAKARTA: Indonesia's main opposition party is set to win a convincing victory at legislative elections next week, boosted by the nomination of the popular Jakarta governor as their presidential candidate, a poll showed.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) will take 37 percent of the vote at Wednesday's election, a survey of 2,000 people by private pollster Roy Morgan Research suggested.

The poll put the corruption-mired Democratic Party of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in fourth place with 10 percent.

A survey commissioned by Jakarta-based pollster the Political Communication (Polcomm) Institute says Joko “Jokowi” Widodo remains an electoral magnet who will boost the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDI-P) vote in the upcoming elections.

“The party’s electability stands at 23.1 percent and according to respondents surveyed, this is because it has nominated Jokowi as its presidential candidate,” said Polcomm Institute director Heri Budianto in a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.

PKPI confident of passing electoral threshold

The Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) says it is confident of meeting the 3.5 percent electoral threshold and of winning a seat in the House of Representatives during the upcoming legislative election.

The PKPI's deputy secretary-general, Rully Soekarta, said on Thursday that despite its optimism, the party would keep a lookout for any attempted fraud to reduce his party's number of votes.

Golkar Party chairman and presidential candidate Aburizal Bakrie has rejected reports predicting a change of party leadership in the near future, saying that all Golkar officials were concentrating on winning the legislative and presidential elections.

Jakarta. According to the results of two surveys announced yesterday, Jusuf Kalla — the Golkar Party’s 2009 presidential candidate and former vice president to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono — is the most popular contender among voters to run alongside Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) candidate Joko Widodo.

In a United Data Center (PDB) survey, the pairing was preferred by 18.8 percent of respondents. The survey, which focused on the top-three contenders ‚ Joko, Prabowo and Aburizal — spoke with 1,500 respondents in 33 provinces.

Golkar Party chief Aburizal “Ical” Bakrie says his party is ready to leave its comfort zone as part of the government and become the next opposition party if it fails to gain a share of power.

"Our democracy does not recognize an opposition. But if by becoming an opposition you mean being outside the Cabinet, Golkar is ready for that. Local Bukit Barisan residents’ voting right at risk

Approximately 1,500 residents of the South Bukit Barisan National Park in Kaur regency, Bengkulu, might not be able to vote in the upcoming legislative election as no officers from the Regional General Elections Commission (KPUD) have visited the area to register them.

Sofyan, a local resident, said on Monday that the local administration considered his neighborhood a shanty town. However, in 2009 four polling stations were set up in the area.

Golkar Party's presidential candidate Aburizal Bakrie looked confident when he led the party's campaign in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Tuesday amid support for former vice president Jusuf Kalla, who is of South Sulawesi descent, who had also been touted as a potential vice presidential candidate.

Jakarta. A fatal drive-by shooting on the streets of a Bireun district village on Monday night was the latest instance of politically motivated violence in the turbulent run-up to the April 9 legislative election, the National Police said on Wednesday.

“It’s clear that [the shooting was motivated by] competition between political parties,” National Police Chief Sutarman said. “We ask the people of Aceh to stay away from any provocation of any political power that may lead to violence.”

Jakarta. The state palace has maintained its innocence over the accusation that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has misused the presidential plane to campaign on behalf of his Democratic Party.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said the complaints filed to the the Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) by some activists and non-government organizations were irrelevant because they ignored the fact that as Indonesia’s president, Yudhoyono was entitled to use the state’s facilities.

Jakarta. As overseas ballots for Indonesia’s April 9 legislative elections came in from Hong Kong — the first place to open its ballot boxes — a General Elections Commission (KPU) official said voter participation was up from 2009, but still quite low.

“Compared to the last election, voter turnout in Hong Kong is far greater,” KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Around 700 people cast votes in 2009, while around 6,600 did this year — some eight times more, he said.

Overseas voting began on March 30 and ends April 6.

KPK awaits president`s answer on social aid funds

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had yet to reply to its letter recommending that the social aid funds be managed by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"We have yet to receive the presidents reply to our letter, but we are monitoring this matter," KPKs Deputy Chief Busyro Muqqodas told newsmen here on Tuesday in response to a question on the antigraft bodys letter to the head of state. 

Everything to Fight For as Voters Still Undecided a Week Before Poll

Jakarta. A survey by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank, showed that nearly half of the voters registered for this year’s elections are still undecided about who they will vote for.

“That means they can still change their mind, according to 45.8 percent of voters,” said CSIS researcher Philips Vermonte on Monday, adding that the institution’s survey also showed 42.4 percent claimed they are certain of their choice.

Philips said the findings indicated the competition in both the legislative and presidential elections remained tight.
