A political analyst from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) says the Golkar Party’s strategy of glorifying the successes of the New Order regime is a mistake.

Siti Zuhro said Golkar should focus on issues in the reform era, such as corruption, collusion and nepotism (KKN), instead of reminiscing about the past.

“We should not forget that we toppled the New Order regime because we wanted to eradicate KKN,” she said after a discussion in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Moeldoko wishes KPU asked for help sooner

Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko said he regretted the tardiness of a request for help in organizing the upcoming April 9 legislative election from the General Elections Commission (KPU).

“I offered the KPU my help last year but it barely responded. Now, with the election drawing near, just a week away, it finally requests back up. I will do it anyway but I must draw a firm line first so the TNI won’t be blamed should anything go wrong,” Moeldoko told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Hundreds of retired military servicemen have collectively voiced their support for Gerindra Party presidential hopeful Lt. Gen. (ret) Prabowo Subianto.

Speaking for the veterans, former deputy army chief of staff Lt. Gen. (ret) Johannes Suryo Prabowo said they supported Prabowo solely because of his reliable character.

Suryo denied that the veterans came out together as a stunt to boost Prabowo's popularity. He said the support reflected the true aspirations of the veterans.

Political violence increases in Aceh ahead of election

The National Police chief of operational assistance, Insp. Gen. Arif Wachyunadi, has said the incidence of political violence in Aceh was increasing. So far this campaign season the police have recorded 24 cases of political violence, three more than were recorded during the 2009 general election. 

Arif highlighted that heated tension and competition between rival parties was likely the source of the violence.

Jakarta. Political parties were called on by a group of economists to disclose their targets in creating jobs, eradicating poverty, taming inflation and boosting growth — with a comprehensive plan to achieve such goals.

“From what we have watched and studied on their campaigns, no party has a comprehensive strategic policy on the economy,” said Hendri Saparini, an executive director at the Center of Reform on Economics (Core), a non-governmental organization focusing on economic policy, in a discussion in Jakarta on Thursday.

Damaged ballots on the up ahead of election, says KPU

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has announced an increasing number of damaged ballots, from the earlier amount of 1.5 million to the current 2.7 million.

“We have received reports of 2.7 million damaged ballots, approximately 0.37 percent out of the total number. It is widespread in 301 regencies and municipalities,” KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said the KPU would verify the number of reported damaged ballots before reprinting the ballots.

Number of eligible voters shrinks to 185.8 million

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has removed hundreds of thousands of voters considered ineligible from the final voter list (DPT) for the 2014 legislative election.

On Nov. 4, 2013, the KPU recorded the number of eligible voters at 186,172,508. That number had fallen to 185,822,507 by Feb.15.

“They were removed because they were no longer considered eligible,” said KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik in a plenary meeting on the DPT at KPU headquarters on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP) has an eye on six figures from outside the party that it is considering naming as its presidential- vice presidential candidates for the 2014 presidential election.

SBY warned over social aid funds ahead of election

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) sent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono a letter on Tuesday, recommending that all social aid funds be managed under the Social Affairs Ministry to avoid budget embezzlement ahead of the general election.

KPK spokesman Johan Budi said ministries that had no direct relationship with social activities should no longer be authorized to manage social aid funds, due to the fact most ministries had political leaders at their helms.

Bawaslu to summons three parties

The Elections Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu), in cooperation with the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), has found that three political parties contesting in the 2014 election have allegedly violated campaign advertising regulations.

Bawaslu intends to summons officials from the parties that allegedly breached the rules to seek clarification.

“We will summons them for questioning next week,” Bawaslu staff member Nasrullah said on Monday, as quoted by tempo.co.

The three parties are the Golkar Party, the Hanura Party and the NasDem Party.

Candidates competing in the July 2014 presidential election will have an opportunity to explain to voters their positions on major human rights issues thanks to a new survey, an international non-governmental organization (INGO) has said.

Human Rights Watch (HRW), an INGO that conducts research and advocacy on human rights, said that it had distributed a questionnaire to likely presidential candidates on March 21, giving them nine questions on the country’s most pressing human rights concerns.

Bandung (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) will be sued by several associations for the blind grouped under "Forum of Contesting Blind" over the absence of braille templates for blind voters in the legislative elections 2014.

"We will fight the injustice, what the KPU has done against blind voters. We will file a lawsuit against the KPUs decision of not providing braille templates for us," Suhendar, the forums chairman, said here on Tuesday.

The lawsuit will be filed in the Constitution Court or the State Administrative Court (PTUN).

An Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) campaign rally led by chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Tuesday afternoon nearly devolved into chaos after local party officials confronted a large group of motorists who had been attempting to disrupt the event.
