Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation with some 17 thousand islands, has been holding relatively peaceful and smooth general elections since its Independence in 1945.

Jakarta. Just days before Indonesia's presidential election, three new electability surveys have shown conflicting results of who the likely winner would be.

The incumbent intends to repeat his 2014 performance in cities and regencies across Central Java to secure at least 70 percent of all votes in the province, which is widely regarded as his stronghold. 

The pace of the Saturday evening's presidential candidate debate between Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Prabowo Subianto was noticably slower than that of the one between their respective running mates on March 17.

A poll released by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on Thursday shows President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo with a double-digit lead over Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, with less than a month to go until election day, April 17.

All eyes in the country are now looking to the third presidential election debate on Sunday, the first and only to pit the two vice-presidential candidates, whose backgrounds are as different as night and day, against each other by themselves.

A little over a month is left for the presidential and legislative election campaigns, with women candidates facing even harder challenges than those in the 2014 elections, candidates, lawmakers and women activists say.  

While no longer in command or leading troops, former military top brass is still seen as very influential in the April presidential election.

The two presidential tickets running in the 2019 election are competing for support from former military generals, with each camp claiming it has stronger backing than the other.

Presidential candidate pair Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin campaign team spokesperson Ace Hasan Syadzily said he was sure the incumbent pair would be unstoppable in the upcoming presidential election.
