AP Interview: Malaysia's Anwar says can win polls

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Tuesday that he believes his three-party alliance can win this weekend's national polls and topple a coalition that has ruled for nearly 56 years.

Sunday's general elections will pit Prime Minister Najib Razak's National Front coalition against Anwar's People's Alliance, which has pledged to tackle what it considers deep-rooted problems like corruption and racial discrimination.

KPU mulls amending rule on campaign ad

The General Elections Commission (KPU) is considering amending its 2013 regulation that requires all media outlets to provide equal coverage of every legislative candidate.

Some organizations and politicians have said the regulation would shackle press freedom.

According to Article 46 (1), any media outlets that do not provide equal portion of duration or space to each legislative hopeful will receive sanctions ranging from written warnings to publication or broadcasting bans.

President Susilo Yudhoyono in Jakarta has said that competition would be very tight in the presidential elections in 2014.

"The 2014 presidential elections would be different from the ones in 2004 and 2009 because there will be no incumbent in the 2014 elections while the political arena would be very wide to make the competition widen and fiercer than before," he said at a general lecture on the national democracy in 2013 held by the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) here on Tuesday.

Existing laws blamed for driving political deals

Several observers have blamed existing legislation for encouraging political parties to rely on business tycoons to support their operational costs, saying such practices often lead to political transactions.

According to the Clean Indonesia Movement (GIB) chairman Adhie Massardi, several existing regulations had driven political parties to dishonestly exercise all possible means to solicit financial aid.

Anas the most loathed and hated politician of 2012

A new study shows Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum has been cast by the media as the most hated politician in 2012.

The study, conducted between March 2011 and December 2012, shows that most stories about Anas that the news media produced were about his alleged involvement in an abundance of graft.

The Founding Fathers House (FFH), an NGO that conducted the study, analyzed 32,620 articles in 12 national newspapers, 27, 916 articles in seven online news portal and 9,069 news broadcast on seven TV stations. 

Lawmakers at odds on presidential bill

 Political parties in the House of Representatives (DPR) remain at odds on setting the threshold of support needed to nominate a presidential candidate in 2014.

Under the 2008 presidential election law, presidential candidates must be supported by a party or a coalition of parties that secured 25 percent of the popular vote or 20 percent of the seats in the House in the previous election.

13 Political Parties Pass Verification for 2014 Elections

Thirteen political parties have passed factual verification conducted by the General Election Commission (KPU) for 2014 elections. 

Three other political parties, including Golkar and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), yet to pass the verification. The factual verification includes (1) core party structure (chairman, secretary, treasurer), party's office, and representation of 30% female in the party structure.
