The campaign team of presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno has reported 15 district heads in Makassar, South Sulawesi, to the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) over footage that reportedly promotes the incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and running mate Ma’ruf Amin. 

Govt willing to pardon remaining MIT members if they surrender

The government will consider pardoning the remaining members of the East Indonesia Mujahiddin (MIT) terrorist group if they surrender to security officers, an official said on Thursday.

"We will offer them a pardon once they leave their hideouts. They are Indonesian citizens after all," Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said on Thursday.

The government is insisting on including the role of the Indonesian Military (TNI) in the revision of the Terrorism Law in its efforts to safeguard the country against the threat of terrorism, a minister said on Wednesday.

Indonesia should not rely only on the National Police's anti-terrorist squad Densus 88 amid the rising global threat of terrorism, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said. The government is considering whether to combine the force with the TNI to strengthen security measures.

EU, Indonesia launch free trade talks

The EU’s 28 member states agreed on Monday to launch free trade talks with Indonesia, despite growing public doubts in Europe about two major transatlantic deals.

The deal with Indonesia will build on pacts with other Asian powers such as Singapore and Vietnam.

“The EU and Indonesia represent a huge market of 750 million consumers. These negotiations are key to unleash synergies between our economies,” said EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem and Indonesian Trade Minister Tom Lembong in a joint statement.

Jokowi to sign Tax Amnesty Law soon

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will soon sign the Tax Amnesty Law after the House of Representatives moved to pass the tax amnesty bill into law on Tuesday.

"The President has 30 days to sign the law," Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said at the State Palace on Wednesday.

Most important, Pramono continued, were instruments to facilitate inflows from the tax amnesty program. The government estimates that additional tax revenue from the program could reach Rp 165 trillion. He said the program would also have a multiplier effect on development and economic growth.

Constitutional Court calls on Jokowi to OK regional elections bill

The Constitutional Court has called on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to immediately sign the bill on a revision to the 2015 Regional Elections Law that was approved by the House of Representative earlier this month.

The signing of bill by the President is necessary so that the court can proceed with a judicial review submitted by groups of residents, said Constitutional Court chairman Arief Hidayat in Jakarta on Monday.

Govt allocates extra funds for defense, security

The government and the House of Representatives’ budget committee agreed Thursday to allocate more funds to the Defense Ministry and the National Police in the revised draft of the 2016 state budget. 

The ministry will get an additional Rp 6.6 trillion (US$499 million) while the National Police will get Rp 5.7 trillion from a total of Rp 18 trillion in additional expenditures for ministries and institutions. 

Regions can reject revocation of bylaws: Home Ministry

The Home Ministry said  regional administrations may file a lawsuit through the Supreme Court against the central government if they rejected the revocation of their problematic bylaws,  an official said on Tuesday.

"[Anyone] including regents, mayors, or even residents can file a lawsuit with the Supreme Court," The ministry's regional autonomy director general, Soni Sumarsono, said as quoted by kompas.com.

He said the ministry's decision to revoke bylaws aimed to improve efficiency and shorten bureaucracy to ease the process of attaining permits.
