The Sudanese presidency on Monday delivered a firm warning to media outlets on its coverage of certain items that poses a danger to national security and the country as a whole.

The unusual statement carrying a veiled threat noted that "some of the media and press outlets are repeatedly dealing with national security, military affairs and justice issues in a negative and destructive manner that subjects the safety of the nation to harm and weakens its cohesion and crumbles its texture".

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) declared that the leader of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, was not arrested for political or security reasons but summoned to complete investigations over a criminal complaint filed by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) this week.

Al-Mahdi was questioned before state security prosecutors on Thursday regarding remarks he made accusing Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing serious abuses in conflict zones in Darfur and Kordofan including rape as well as looting and burning villages.

Sudan’s NUP suspends participation in national dialogue following al-Mahdi’s arrest

The National Umma Party (NUP) today announced that it has suspended its participation in the national dialogue process and called for mobilization following the arrest of its leader al-Sadiq al-Mahdi by Sudanese security.

Al-Mahdi’s personal secretary Mohammed Zaki told reporters that a police force accompanied by personnel in civilian clothes arrested his boss on Saturday night and took him to an unknown location.

Khartoum’s SCSP to engage in dialogue with "outlaws"

The Supreme Council for Social Peace (SCSP) in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum said it has received a list containing names of criminal gangs from the police in order to engage in dialogue with them.

It said in a statement on Saturday that political instability has negatively impacted peaceful coexistence, calling for the need to analyze causes behind violence that accompanied the protests which erupted last September.

Al-Ansar sect, the religious arm of Sudan’s National Umma Party (NUP) warned the government today against inflicting any harm on al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, a day after he appeared for questioning on statements he made on Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last week.

The lead of Friday prayers at the Ansar Mosque in Wad-Nubawi on Friday, Adam Ahmed Youssef, stressed in the sermon that the Sudanese government will be held responsible for any harm that to al-Mahdi.

The leader of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, is scheduled to appear on Thursday before the state security prosecutor for questioning regarding the complaint filed by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) after he accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing serious abuses in Darfur.

The NUP distributed SMS messages and issued a statement confirming that al-Mahdi is determined to appear before the prosecutors amid expectations that a large crowd of his supporters will be present.

SPLM-N repulses fresh government attack in South Kordofan: spokesperson

The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) said on Wednesday they had repulsed attacks by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on its positions in several areas in South Kordofan state.

SPLM-N spokesperson Arnu Ngutulu Lodi in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune said their fighters inflicted heavy losses on the assailant forces when it attempted to capture Sabat in Dalami county in the northern part of the restive state on 11 May.

Lodi added they repulsed another attack on Tomna village in the same area.

SPLM-N’s Arman pessimistic over peace talks with government

SPLM-N secretary general and head of its negotiating delegation Yasir Arman said the two warring parties in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states are far from reaching a peace agreement.

Sudanese government and SPLM-N negotiating delegations last April failed to reach a framework agreement before to start talks to end the three-year conflict in the two southern Sudan states.

The two parties are expected to resume discussions before the end of May.

The leader of Sudan’s opposition National Umma Party (NUP), Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, has expressed readiness to appear before any court provided that it is just and public. 

The statement came after the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) announced that it filed criminal complaint against Al-Mahdi for accusing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of attacking and burning villages in Darfur.

Al-Mahdi described charges of defamation and breach of security and safety filed against him as “void”, reiterating his accusations against RSF.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has announced that national dialogue will convene before the end of the month, warning opposition parties which refused to join against attempting to sabotage the process.

NCP’s political secretary, Mustafa Osman Ismail, said in press statements on Monday that his party will not wait for the opposition parties any longer, adding that they will extend their patience but will not allow dialogue to fail.

The Popular Congress Party (PCP) Kamal Omer affirmed that they will not endorse any attempt to remove the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) by force even if the ultimate goal is to achieve a democratic system.

“[There will be] no more democracy through tanks,” Omer said at a forum organised by the NCP at its headquarters under the title of ‘The prospects of national dialogue and its outcome’.

Sudanese presidential assistant Ibrahim Ghandour said it is possible that upcoming general elections scheduled for next year may be delayed if political forces taking part in the national dialogue process agreed to it.

Ghandour, on a talk show broadcast by the state-run Radio Omdurman on Friday, urged opposition parties to abandon the political tactics approach and join the national dialogue process.

The leader of Sudan’s National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, has urged leading figure Mubarak al-Fadil to establish another political party, saying the latter wouldn’t be allowed to rejoin the NUP.

He said at a press conference on Wednesday that al-Fadil has a habit of bringing with him "too much trouble" stressing that accepting him into the NUP is contingent upon his commitment to NUP’s institutions and constitution.

Sudan’s Political Parties Affairs Council (PPAC) has officially declined to register the Republican Party (RP), saying the latter’s principles contradict with the Islamic creed, social peace and democratic principles necessary for carrying out political activity.

The PPAC said the RP’s registration request violated provisions of Article (1/5) of the 2005 interim constitution and Article (14) of the 2007 Political Parties’ Act.

The leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and his son Abdel-Rahman are working steadfastly to move the party towards rapprochement with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), the outgoing Secretary General Ibrahim al-Amin said.

In a phone interview with Sudan Tribune on Tuesday, al-Amin lashed out at al-Mahdi and accused him of deliberately blocking any attempts to mobilize the party behind popular uprisings in the country as was the case during the September 2013 protests that broke out across the country after the government lifted fuel subsidies.
