Sudan rebel groups have to consider transformation into political parties

Yasir Arman, the deputy leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North led by Malik Agar said political changes in the country and at the international level require to reconsider the armed struggle and to espouse peaceful political tools.

The historical SPLM since its inception in 1983 opted for the armed action against the central government in Khartoum until the signing of a political agreement in 2005. However, the Sudanese faction resorted to the military action just before the independence of South Sudan in July 2011.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement North-led by Malik Agar (SPLM-N Agar) welcomed the position of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) over the opposition’s participation in the 2020 elections and called for a large alliance against al-Bashir’s re-election

The SPLM-N Agar has called since several months for the participation of the opposition in the 2020 general elections in Sudan on the condition that a peace deal is struck, freedoms are guaranteed and transitional arrangements are implemented to ensure free and fair elections.

Sudan’s Bashir reshuffles cabinet

President Omer al-Bashir Monday reshuffled the cabinet members from the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in the National Consensus Government, including the appointment of a new foreign minister and the return of a former presidential aide as interior minister.

According to the decree, the changes didn’t affect the First Vice-President Bakri Hassan Saleh and Prime Minister as it was rumoured in Khartoum.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in a meeting headed by President Omer al-Bashir has endorsed a major cabinet reshuffle, announced the official news agency SUNA on Sunday evening.

The NCP leadership council in a meeting that lasted for more than four hours, discussed the ministerial reshuffle and the economic situation in the country.

In press statements after the meeting, NCP deputy chairman for Faisal Hassan Ibrahim said the cabinet reshuffle includes eight ministers, five ministers of state and 10 governors.

Sudan’s opposition NCF announces boycott of 2020 elections

 A coalition of some opposition left parties, the National Consensus Forces (NCF), said it wouldn’t participate in the 2020 elections and won’t meet with the ruling party to discuss these elections.

On Sunday, the alliance held a meeting with the participation of the heads of the NCF parties and the general secretariat to discuss a number of organizational and political issues.

In a press release extended to Sudan Tribune on Monday, the NCF said the meeting discussed recent economic, social and political developments and ways to an activate joint political action.

Al-Bashir: "Sudan’s new constitution to be approved by next parliament"

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir on Thursday said the permanent constitution would be approved by the elected parliament following the 2020 elections.

On Thursday, al-Bashir met with the parliament speaker Ibrahim Ahmed Omer who handed him over the parliament response to his address before the National Assembly earlier this month.

In a press release following the meeting, al-Bashir said the “next legislature would approve the permanent constitution according to the recommendation of the national dialogue”.

The Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) has called on the opposition forces to escalate peaceful resistance in order to overcome what it described as “quagmire of crises”.

Since January, the economic conditions have deteriorated significantly as prices reached high levels and the Sudanese pounds hit historic low against the US dollar leading to an unprecedented rise in the cost of living. Also, since last week, the East African nation has suffered a severe shortage in gasoline.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Malik Agar voiced its rejection for the re-election of President Omer al-Bashir for a third term in 2020 and called for popular protests against his probable candidature.

The political stance was adopted by its Executive Leadership in a meeting held on 15-16 April 2018, attended by the Chairperson Malik Agar, Deputy Chairperson Yasir Arman and the Secretary-General Ismail Jalab, according to a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Saturday

Sudan’s NCP to launch discussions on new constitution

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) said arrangements have been completed to kick off the dialogue with the political forces.

NCP political secretary Omer Basan said his party would meet with all political forces except the unregistered parties and the armed movements that have not yet been transformed into political parties.

He pointed out that the meetings with the political forces would focus on the outcome of the national dialogue particularly the issues of the constitution, elections commission and the law of the political parties’ council.

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir on Tuesday issued a decree to release all political prisoners in response to a call by the political parties of the National Consensus Government (NCG).

The security forces arrested opposition leaders and dozens of political activists after a series of protests against the austerity measures including the increase of bread price announced at the beginning of January 2018.

El presidente de Sudán, Omar Hasán al Bashir, ha emitido este martes un decreto por el que ordena la puesta en libertad de todos los presos políticos en el país, según ha informado la agencia estatal de noticias SUNA.

Al Bashir ha tomado la decisión en respuesta a los llamamientos de los partidos políticos y las fuerzas que han participado en el diálogo nacional que el presidente puso en marcha el presidente en noviembre de 2015, según precisa la agencia oficial. Por el momento no hay datos de a cuántos presos beneficiaría el indulto presidencial.

The political parties of the National Consensus Government (NCG) have agreed to back the re-election of President Omer al-Bashir in 2020.

The announcement was made by Sudanese Information Minister Ahmed Bilal Osman following a meeting of an NCG delegation with the deputy chairman of the National Congress Party (NCP) Faisal Hassan Ibrahim on Monday.

 Several opposition forces have called on the Sudanese to get inspired by the 33rd anniversary of the 1985 popular uprising to overthrow the regime of President Omer al-Bashir.

In 6 April 1985, the Sudanese people managed to bring down the military regime of former President Gaafar Nimeiri through a popular uprising.

In a statement seen by Sudan Tribune on Friday, the Broad National Front (BNF) led by Ali Mahmoud Hassanien vowed to continue its resistance until toppling the regime.

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir on Monday said the opposition parties within the Sudan Call must choose between their alliance with the armed movements or the civic action.

In a four-day meeting held in the French capital Paris, the Sudan Call picked Sadiq al-Mahdi, the leader of the National Umma Party as the chairman of the opposition umbrella. The meeting also chose Sudan Liberation Movement leader, Minni Minnawi, as a secretary general of the coalition which encompasses political and armed groups.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) on Sunday said arrangements are underway to hold discussions with all political forces over the permanent constitution.

The semi-official Sudan Media Center (SMC) has quoted the NCP political secretary Omer Basan as saying all political forces, not only the ruling party, must participate in the constitution-making process.

“The constitution must be a product of political consensus and agreement in order to overcome a lot of problems and challenges facing the country,” he said

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir and the Minister of State at Federal Government Chamber, Abu Al-Gasim Imam have discussed the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

Imam, who is also the chairman of the former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (Second Revolution) SLM-SR, told reporters following the meeting that they discussed the security arrangement agreement signed between his movement and the Sudanese government.

Al-Mahdi to return to Sudan after opposition meetings

Sudan’s National Umma Party said on Wednesday that its leader Sadiq al-Mahdi has delayed to a later date his return to the country upon the recommendation of the party.

On the first of February, al-Mahdi travelled to Addis Ababa for a consultations meeting with the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on the Roadmap agreement on the political process with the government.

The opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) has called to release its leader Omer al-Digair who is detained since about two months ago, pointing he has been facing a critical health situation.

Al-Digair was arrested while he was in El-Obeid the capital of North Kordofan last January, after calls by his party to protest the increase of bred price within a series of drastic austerity measures included in the budget of 2018.
