Libya electoral commission makes new proposal

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) proposed to have multi-polling centers' system instead of the single-polling system.

"The coming presidential elections will be the first in Libya so there will be no organizational experience in the country. We thus want to save the country the burden of presidential campaigns that will be very difficult to conduct in the vast area of Libya." HNEC said in a statement on Saturday.

Un grupo de seguidores de Saif al Islam, hijo del fallecido líder de Libia Muamar Gadafi, ha lanzado su candidatura a las presidenciales de este año en el país durante un acto celebrado en Túnez.

El grupo, llamado Frente Popular para la Liberación de Libia (PFLL), inició sus actividades en 2017 y haasegurado que su objetivo es lograr unificar Libia, según ha recogido el diario 'The Libya Herald'.

Saif Qaddafi supporters announce his candidacy for elections

Supporters of Saif Al-Islam Qaddafi, son of deposed dictator Muamar Qaddafi, launched their campaign for Saif Al-Islam to run for the 2018 elections.

At a press conference held in Tunis today, the alleged Saif Al-Islam supporters in the guise of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Libya (PFLL), launched their election campaign. The PFLL was launched in Tunis last year.

Their election campaign is to be based on the principles of rebuilding Libya with the help of its neighbours for a unified Libya, with one president and through the existing political process.

HNEC closes on-line overseas voter registration

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) closed on-line overseas voter registration at midnight yesterday – as had been planned. However, it announced that it was extending it by direct registration through embassies until 31 March.

HNEC reported that a total of 6,267 overseas Libyans had registered on-line from 1/2/18 to 12/3/18. The three countries with the highest number of voters registered were the UK with 1,372, followed by 1,100 in Egypt and 783 in the US and Canada.

Faiez Serraj appoints new official spokesperson

Faiez Serraj has appointed a new official spokesperson for himself in his capacity as President of the Presidency Council. The spokesperson will not represent the views of the whole Presidency Council.

Today, the spokesperson Mohamed Salaak (Alsalaak) held his first press conference which he said will be a regular event every Monday at 1 pm. Salaak spoke for a total of 12 minutes, taking questions for about 5 minutes.

Aref Nayed to run for Libya presidency

Former Libyan Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Aref Al-Nayed, has announced his intentions to run for the country’s presidency, slated for later this year.

In an interview with Egyptian newspaper Youm7 in Dubai, Al-Nayed said he is preparing an election campaign in cooperation with teamwork of young people to get Libya out of its crisis.

“Elections are the only way out of the Libyan crisis,” he thinks.

Overseas voter registration extended until 12 March

The High National Election Commission (HNEC) has extended the period for overseas voter registration until Monday 12 March. Overseas voter registration was due to end tomorrow.

HNEC said that in view of the moderate rate of overseas voter registration and due to requests by the Libyan diaspora for HNEC to extend the registration period as a result of their inability to register in time, it has pushed back the deadline to 12 March.

Bukhmada replaced by Nadouri in east, Ashour appointed as new Interior Minister in west

Wanis Bukhmada has been replaced as head of the Benghazi Joint Security Room by Military Governor Abdul Razzaq Al- Nadhuri.

The move comes on the back of two massive security incursions in January and February leading to a large number of deaths and injuries.

Meanwhile, in a separate move, Presidency Council and Government of National Accord Prime Minister-designate Faiez Serraj, has appointed General Abdulsalam Ashour as the new Interior Minister. He replaced Araf Khoja.

El comisario del Consejo de Paz y Seguridad de la Unión Africana (UA), Smail Chergui, ha afirmado este lunes que Libia no debe precipitarse a la hora de celebrar elecciones, abogando por consolidar la situación y lograr que las mismas sean creíbles cuando se celebren.

El enviado especial de Naciones Unidas para Libia, Ghasán Salamé, está impulsando una 'hoja de ruta' para intentar poner fin al conflicto que incluye la celebración de comicios este año.

Libyan mayors agreed in their first gathering in Shahat in east Libya to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya, as per their final statement on Tuesday.

The mayors reiterated the unity of Libya and the rejection of any foreign intervention or presence on the Libyan land and in the territorial waters, renouncing all kinds of terrorism and radicalism.

HoR elects new first deputy president.

The House of Representatives (HoR) has elected Fawzi Al-Nuwairi as its new first deputy president. He replaces Emhemed Shouaib who resigned the position last weekend.

After they had earlier appointed a new governor of the Central Bank of Libya, members remained to decide on the post. Nuwairi, the member from Sorman, won in the second round of voting, taking 59 votes to 44 for Mohamed Al-Waar, from Bani Walid.

 

High Elections Commission announces start of elections in Libya

The Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) Emad Al-Sayeh announced Wednesday the kickoff of the Libyan elections process by registering voters and updating the electoral records.

Al-Sayeh said in a joint press conference with the UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame in Tripoli that the registration will take effect for the coming 60 days with possibility of extension.
