Troika say Sudan election does not reflect 'will of the people'

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway (the members of the ‘Sudan Troika') announced in a press release yesterday that they do not consider the Sudanese election held last week to express the will of the people.

The three Western governments “regret the Government of Sudan’s failure to create a free, fair, and conducive elections environment,” reads a joint press release. They also “condemn the acts of violence during the election period”.

Signing of Peace Agreement to Open New Page in Mali's History

The signing of the peace and reconciliation agreement in Mali, scheduled for 15 May in Bamako, will open a "new page" in the history of this country, which is seeking stability, security and development.

Signed in Algiers on March 1st by the government of Mali and the political-military groups of Northern Mali, under the supervision of the international mediation, led by Algeria, the peace and reconciliation agreement is the fruit of a long negotiation process launched in July 2014.

Greek minority decides to run on its own in the June 21 elections in Albania

In Albania, United Human Rights Party (UHRP) has decided to run in the June 21 elections on its own.

This political force that represents the Greek minority in Albania, is currently part of the governing majority.

But, with the entry in the left wing coalition of PM Edi Rama of PJIU, the party that defends the rights of Tchams, UHRP de facto finds itself outside of the coalition that won the general elections two years ago.

The 2015 general election has brought about “new political realities”, says Yasir Arman, External Relations Officer of the Sudan Revolutionary Front rebel alliance and Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.

In a statement released today, Arman lauds the “15 percent voter turnout”, saying that the boycott of the election by the majority of the Sudanese represents “a vote of no confidence in the regime, and it is, indeed, a vote for change”.

In Tizi Ouzou, several demonstrations are organized to demand the formalization of the Amazigh language. Thousands of people took part in a march at the Hasnaoua university waving banners that read in part: "no dignity without freedom."

At least nine killed in bomb attack on U.N. vehicle in Somalia

Two Kenyans and seven Somali guards were killed in a bomb attack on a vehicle carrying workers to the United Nations compound in Garowe in the Somali region of Puntland on Monday, police said.

Authorities suspect Islamist al Shabaab militants of carrying out the bombing in the northeastern city, Mohamed Abdi, a police officer at the scene said.

“A blast hit the bus carrying workers to the U.N. office … At least nine people died,” he told Reuters. Six bystanders were wounded, he added.

This is supposedly allow the negotiating teams from the various parties to close the gaps on the allocation of portfolios - and the basic guidelines of the government.

 

‘4.800 million Sudanese cast their votes’: NEC

The head of the National Election Commission NEC), Mukhtar El Asam, announced on Sunday that the number of votes cast in the presidential and parliamentary election reached 4.800 million. 13.8 million Sudanese were eligible to vote.

He predicted that the percentage of the voter turnout will lie between 36 and 38 percent in the end. “It may reach 40 percent”, he said, stressing that the low numbers were expected.

Sudan Appeal forces will not recognise election results

The Sudan Appeal signatories will not recognise the outcome of the election, nor the government that will be based on it.

The allied opposition forces, who signed the Sudan Appeal, a political communiqué calling for regime-change, in December last year, have held meetings with US, European, and African officials. They informed them that the Sudanese ruling party needs to be pressured to accept a transitional government, and a no-fly zone in the war-torn regions of Darfur, South Kordofan, and the Blue Nile.

The long-awaited re-amendment of the electoral constituencies law, the last obstacle in the way of Egypt's long-delayed parliamentary polls, was approved by the cabinet on 14 April.

Minister of parliamentary affairs, Ibrahim El-Heneidi, told reporters that he has high hopes that the re-amendment of the law, alongside another two legislations on the house of representatives and the exercise of political rights, will not contradict the new constitution and finally pave the way for the country's long-awaited parliamentary elections.
