Supreme court extends president Ghani’s tenure

The Supreme Court of Afghanistan has approved the extension of President Ashraf Ghani’s tenure until the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 28. 

Based on the Constitution, Ghani’s tenure ends on May 22. 
 
“In line with the provision of the law and with the consideration of the situation of the country and based on the jurisprudential rules, the tenure of the president and his deputies is endorsed until the presidential elections,” the Supreme Court said in a directive.  

Polling stations of seven municipalities end local government elections

The Central Committee for the Municipal Councils Elections closed the polling stations in seven municipalities that held local elections, after the end of the voting process at six o'clock yesterday evening.

The turnout in the seven municipalities until the closing of the ballot boxes amounted to 41%, with Al-Shuwairf Municipality registering the highest record with 67%, while the Municipality of Al-Qarada witnessed the lowest participation rate of 33%, according to Central Committee for the Municipal Councils Elections on Facebook.

Egyptians on Sunday participated in the second day of polling for a snap referendum on the "Pharaoh motion", a constitutional amendment which could see President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power until 2030. 

Many say the vote has so far been characterised by bribery and coercion in an attempt to swell the turnout in Sisi's favour.

Des centaines de personnes ont manifesté dimanche dans la capitale marocaine Rabat pour réclamer la libération des détenus du Hirak, mouvement de protestation ayant secoué la région du Rif en 2016-2017, après la confirmation de leurs peines allant jusqu'à 20 ans d'emprisonnement.

Vingt-quatre candidats à la candidature à l’élection présidentielle ont retiré leur dossier, selon un dernier décompte publié ce samedi 10 avril par le ministère de l’Intérieur et des collectivités locales.

« Le bilan provisoire de la remise des formulaires de souscription de signatures individuelles pour les postulants à la candidature à l’élection de la présidence de la République, arrêté le jeudi 18 avril 2019, compte vingt-quatre (24) lettre d’intention déposées », précise le communiqué du ministère diffusé en fin de journée.

The 2019 general election is likely to be postponed in Banggai regency, Central Sulawesi, due to a delay in the distribution of ballots.

Banggai regency was among the regions that were rocked by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake on April 12.

It was reported earlier that nine districts in the regency, including Luwuk, North Luwuk, South Luwuk, East Luwuk, West Luwuk, Batui, West Toili and Moilong, had not received their assigned quota of ballots by Wednesday.

Turkey's main opposition party candidate has officially won Istanbul's mayoral seat on Wednesday, after the city's electoral board decided that he was the winner of the March 31 local polls, despite objections by Turkey's ruling party.

Ekrem Imamoglu, the Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate, received the mandate at the board headquarters, with a large crowd of supporters celebrating outside the building in the Istanbul district of Caglayan.

Elections delayed in some areas of Jayapura

Voting in several regions of Jayapura, Papua have been delayed owing to a lack of materials. 

“Besides in Abepura district, voting has been delayed in three subdistricts in South Jayapura district,” Papua General Elections Commission (KPU) head Theodorus Kossay said in Jayapura on Wednesday as quoted by Antara. 

Election materials such as ballots and ballot boxes have been sent to KPU Jayapura but have yet to be distributed to the polling stations in the aforementioned areas.

Jakarta. Quick counts from several pollsters put incumbent Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on course to winning a second term as president of the Republic of Indonesia after the world's biggest one-day elections took place on Wednesday (17/04).

With around 50 percent of the votes already in, Jokowi and his running mate Ma’ruf Amin are leading by 55 percent to rivals Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno's 45 percent. 

Pollsters Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting, Cyrus and Charta Politika have already collected more than 50 percent of their sample votes.
