Afghans To Vote In Parliamentary Elections

Afghans are due to cast their ballots in the long-awaited parliamentary elections today (Saturday) amid heavy security measures across the country.

Nearly nine million people registered to vote in the elections. 

Polling centers in 32 provinces will open at 7am this morning. 

The Independent Election Commission says the polling centers will remain open until 4pm today.

The election commission has 5,070 centers across the country and more than 2,500 candidates are competing for 249 seats in the Wolesi Jirga, the Lower House of Parliament.

IECC Disqualifies 7 Candidates Two Days Before Elections

The Independent Election Complaints Commission’s (IECC) spokesman Ali Reza Rohani on Thursday announced seven more candidates have been disqualified.

The IECC spokesman said the seven candidates were disqualified for various reasons. Some had criminal records, others were found to be ineligible and one had Iranian citizenship, he said.

According to him, the disqualified candidates were from 6 different provinces.

Two were from Herat and one each from Wardak, Farah, Kunduz, Ghor and Balk provinces.  

PTI front runner despite losing seats in by-polls

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: After a neck-and-neck contest, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) managed to win most of the seats in Sunday’s by-elections on 11 National and 24 provincial assembly seats with the PML-N seems to be edging past the PTI in Punjab.

Most of the seats where by-elections were held had been vacated by those elected on more than one seat in the July 25 general elections, including Prime Minister Imran Khan who won in all the five NA constituencies he had contested.

IEC Issues Accreditation To Over 200,000 Election Observers

Officials from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said they have issued over 200,000 accreditation cards to national and international observers and organizations, including the Afghan election watchdog organizations. 

IEC spokesman Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi said 19 people who have received the cards are international observers who will monitor and oversee October 20 parliamentary elections. 

Hashemi said a large number of these observers are volunteers who will work at polling stations to prevent fraud and electoral violations.

With just over a week to go for Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Thursday that it has noted, that despite significant security challenges, progress has been made by the country's security forces to create conditions for the majority of citizens to exercise their right to vote.

Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan said in the statement: "Afghanistan’s security forces are fully responsible for providing security for the elections process."

The campaign for upcoming parliamentary elections officialy kicked off on Friday night with candidates installing billboards in the city and posting videos and pictures on social media platforms.

The vote for the Wolesi Jirga, the Lowe House of parliament, is scheduled for October 20. However, it remains unclear if voting will take place in areas held by the Taliban.

Election monitoring organizations and some officials have said insecurity is a main challenge for the upcoming elections.

PTI's Arif Alvi officially declared winner of 13th presidential election

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday officially declared Dr Arif Alvi of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) as the winner of yesterday's presidential election.

Dr Alvi was declared as the 13th president of Pakistan after an official count showed he had managed to bag the most number of votes from among the three candidates, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman and PPP's Aitzaz Ahsan being the other two.

HoR fails again to vote on referendum law

Libya’s House of Representatives (HoR), Libya’s internationally recognized parliament, failed to muster a quorum for yesterday’s session, which it needed in order to vote-in the constitutional amendment needed to legalise its referendum bill. The referendum bill was agreed in principle at the HoR’s last session before the Eid holidays – subject to a constitutional amendment being passed.

 

Without strong political will, Libya’s elections uncertain.

Imran sworn in as 22nd prime minister

ISLAMABAD: PM-elect Imran Khan took oath as the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan on Friday at a ceremony held at the President House.

Khan, who secured an 80-vote lead over PML-N’s PM nominee Shehbaz Sharif, was administered the oath by President Mamnoon Hussain.

The oath was attended by the country’s top political and military leaders. First Lady Bushra Imran was also present at the ceremony and was sitting in the first row next to NA Speaker Asad Qaiser.

329 MNAs take oath as 15th National Assembly is born

The first session of the 15th National Assembly ended on Monday after 329 members of the lower house of the parliament took oath following their election in the July 25 countrywide polls.

Outgoing NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to the MNAs-elect in the 342-member house, in what is a part of only the second democratic transition in the country's history.
